Very readable overview

This is a perfect choice for the novice reader who is trying to get a basic understanding of the whys and wherefores of compentency models. It's very readable book and not nearly as dry as I might have expected. In particular, the authors' copious use of real-world examples, cases and models is extremely helpful. I even got some great ideas for project management that I'll be able to apply broadly in my work, regardless of whether or not my organization undertakes a competency modeling project.
My only criticism is that the book focuses exclusively on CMs in a HRM context; there is no real discussion of industry-scale models, which was my main reason for reading the book. Nevertheless, a very good resource for a beginner.

A good coverage of the field of competency models

Competency Models have become a must for an up-to-date HRM system - I have been helping companies to build this kind of models since 1996. These models make great tools for selection, training and development, appraisal and succession planning. Unfortunately, until I came accross this book, I found that most of the reference works to this field are quite unaccessible, not the kind I would put into the hands of a newcomer. This is a practical book, showing why competency models are important and helping the reader to go through the complete process of setting up such a system, including a chapter on how to sell the idea to others in the organisation - I wish some of the people I work with would have read this book before, that would have smoothened the problems that are caused if these steps aren't followed well. The book also shows how to transform your competence model into a 360° feedback questionnaire. It was the first time I came accross a book explaining how to do that! The only area that I found a bit weak is the compentency-interview (both for building the model, als doing behavior-based interviews for recruiting), but maybe that's a bias coming from my own expertise in that domain (my book "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence" includes a full chapter on how to ask the right questions).
Conclusion - whether you know about Competency Models or not - add this book to your library! And if you are a consultant in the field of competency models, this is a book you might recommend to your customers.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, received her undergraduate degree in journalism with major supporting work in chemistry and psychology. Her graduate work was in geology and she has taught in public and private schools and at the university level. She has done writing and editing for the Encyclopaedia Britannica Education Corporation and for various professional journals and organizations. With James Fitzsimmons she edited New Service Development: Creating Memorable Experiences published in 2000 by Sage Publications. Her nonprofessional activities have included volunteer work for the Red Cross aquatics program and in wildlife rehabilitation. She has particular interests in the areas of environmental issues and the responsibilities of patients and physicians in health care.

Received a B.S.E. in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan, an MBA from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. with distinction from the University of California at Los Angeles. His research in the area of emergency ambulance location won the Stan Hardy Award in 1983 for the best paper published in the field of operations management. A computer program, referred to as CALL, has been used by major cities worldwide to plan emergency ambulance systems. Consulting assignments include the RAND Corporation; the U.S. Air Force; the cities of Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Melbourne, and Auckland; the Texas comptroller; General Motors; La Quinta Motor Inns; Greyhound; TRICON Restaurants International; and McDonald’s. Teaching experience includes faculty appointments at the University of California at Los Angeles, California State University at Northridge, the University of New Mexico, Boston University Overseas Graduate Program, California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, and the Helsinki School of Economics and Business. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Michigan and has held industrial engineering positions at Corning Glass Works and Hughes Aircraft Company. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an officer in charge of base construction projects.

Excellent African Photography Guide

I'm a professional wildlife photographer and spend a considerable time each year in Africa trying to get the best images possible. I'm always trying to improve my craft so have read several animal photography guide book recently (including several specifically written on African wildlife photography). Hands-down this is the by far the best guide I've ever read on this specifically subject. The author goes into great detail to explain why certain camera settings work with certain conditions or with certain types of images that you're trying to make. This is a wonderful book! If you've never been to Africa but planning to go, or if you're going back and want to improve your images, then this book is a "must have" for you.

Definitely not worth the price.

Having been to Africa on a photo safari, I ordered this book seeking additional advice. I was very disappointed. Considering the cost, I found the paper to look and feel very cheap. The images themselves were nice in terms of composition and action, but not very well printed. The photo advice was very basic and not necessary for anyone having at least some familiarity with a digital camera and lens. There were some good suggestions regarding composition, but again all very basic and of limited value to me. Indeed, there are better and cheaper books out there. Needless to say, after a quick but fairly thorough once over, I returned the book the next day.

Overpriced for what you get

Way overpriced for what you get IMO. The author is fascinated by lions and cheetahs. Nothing wrong with that, except that it seems 50+% of the photos are of lions or cheetahs, with most of the remainder being of big mammals. There are only a few photos of birds, and those only the large birds such as vultures and eagles. Many of the lion shots are taken at very close range which are among the easier photos to take in Africa.

The advice, which is what one pays for, seems simplistic to me. This may have value for a person who has never done any wildlife photography before, but for someone who is an active hobbyist, or pro, you probably already know all this (e.g. look at your histogram to check exposure) and the Africa-specific advice seems nothing more than what one could easily find on-line for free or a lot less money.

On a more subjective note, I was unhappy with the printing and photos in this book. It uses a large sans serif font and wide margins. On my copy the printing was weird with some pages having a dirty gray matte around the edge and others not. The author's photographs did not appeal to me either. It may be the printing again, since the colors seem unsaturated and the white balance off. The photos also appear to me either too sharpened or muddy like a watercolor. This may be an artifact of the non-glossy paper the book is printed on.

The author talks about his photo settings for different photos, but there are no illustrations about what the photo might look like if you had different or default settings, so the educational value is reduced.

The author's advice is generally good advice. My problem is that I learned very, very little from this expensive book, and did not get the inspiration I get from books like Art Wolfe's "Africa" (Africa Jane Goodall

A must for anyone who owns a horse.

This book is a must for any horse owner. It is full of information written in laymans terms. Whether you are a veterinary student or just a new horse owner, you can literally see why your horse moves the way he does, why his body works the way that it does, and why he even behaves the way that he does. There is so much information about other farm animals also...dogs, goats, cows, deer, etc.
A great guide to understanding what your vet is talking about also.
This book will never be out dated!

This revised edition makes it easier for students to understand and be able to relate to the anatomy and physiology of farm animals and is presented in such a manner that non-veterinary students would have no problems dealing with this complex topic

James Habersham was an early American success story. After arriving in Savannah in 1738, he failed in his efforts to wrest a living from the Georgia wilderness and lived his first year at public expense. Then, by dint of his own efforts and through the connections he forged, Habersham emerged as one of the colony's most influential and prosperous citizens, making his name as a planter, merchant, evangelist, and political leader. The third wealthiest person in the colony at the time of his death in 1775, Habersham had a public career that included service as the secretary of Georgia, president of the King's council, and acting Governor.

But Habersham's story is more than biography. It also provides a window into colonial Georgia and its transformation from a struggling colony on the brink of collapse in the 1740s to a prosperous province in the 1770s, confident enough to defy the Crown. Ranging over such topics as the rise of Methodist missionary fervor, the development of transatlantic trade, the introduction of slavery, and the escalating debate over American independence, Frank Lambert tells how Habersham's success is inextricably tied to Georgia's fortunes and how he played a major role in helping the colony exploit its abundant resources. Habersham's economic development plan provided a blueprint for attracting new settlers, supplying an abundance of cheap labor, and opening new markets.

Habersham's achievements, however, are obscured by his unpopular stance on American independence. While his three sons distinguished themselves as Patriots, Habersham remained loyal to the Crown, though he had opposed Britain's new imperial policies in the 1760's. Nevertheless, it was Habersham's loyal service to colonial Georgia that enabled the colony to separate successfully from the mother country and assume its place in the new republic as a prosperous, vigorous state.

There are many historical figures that have deservedly been neglected by history and historians; James Habersham is not one. He deserves to be rescued and to be put in the center of colonial Georgia, where he was when he lived. Frank Lambert sheds light on the workings of colonial mercantile culture and how a merchant class grew from a decidedly uncommercial colonial experiment. It is a pleasure to see this book and it is my hope that it marks a revival in scholarship of this early period.

A very readable story of a Colonial giant who faced a moral issue

This is a must read for any serious student of Colonial America. I have read earlier works on James Habersham because I am a descendant of his through his son also named James. This work, however, provided me with a rich historical context in which his interaction with his peers was fully explained and played out. The "names" from history came alive. It gave me an understanding of that era that all other books had failed to convey. Of particular interest was how business was conducted across the Atlantic. Apparently aside from finding honest partners the key was the use of the written documents: those merchants who could be absolutely clear about what their remote partners should do/not do thrived while the rest withered. The book also explained James Habersham's switch on slavery in Georgia. South Carolina had it, but Georgia did not. Habersham analyzed the feeble economy of the Georgia colony and said that it was sick and would die were slavery not introduced. It was and he and his family thrived until the Civil War. History is what it is.
