About the Author

Tom McKnight was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He started out to be a geologist, but discovered geography through the tutelage of Edwin J. Foscue, and soon shifted his interest to the "mother science." His training includes a B.A. degree (geology major, geography minor) from Southern Methodist University, an M.A. degree (geography major, geology minor) from the .University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. degree (geography major, meteorology minor) from the University of Wisconsin. He has been lucky enough to live in Australia for extended periods on twenty different occasions. Most of his professional life has been based at U.C.L.A., but he has also taught temporarily at nine American, three Canadian, and three Australian universities. He served as Chair of the U.C.L.A. Geography Department from 1978 to 1983. His favorite places are Australia, Colorado, Yellowstone Park, and Dallas.

Regional Geography of the United States and Canada (3rd Edition) is a well written text, aimed at the undergraduate level (primarily upper division). The material is presented in a readable format, using maps, illustrations and pictures when necessary to convey a point. This book focuses on landscape appreciation of the regional geography of the United States and Canada. He emphasizes the description and interpretation of North American landscapes, including their development. It covers such topics as: the North American continent; the physical environment; population; cities; regions; the Atlantic Northeast; French Canada; megalopolis; the Appalachians and Ozarks; the inland South; the Southeastern coast; the Heartland; the Great Plains and prairies; the Rocky Mountains; the Intermontane West; the California region; the Hawaiian Islands; the North Pacific coast; the Boreal Forest; and the Arctic. About the Author
S.C. Reznikoff, CSI, is professor of interior architecture in the Department of Design, College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Arizona State University, Tempe, and a national expert on topics of flammability and life safety in interior design. In 1960 Reznikoff founded Louisiana Interior Design Institute and served as director until 1983. Specifications for Commercial Interiors: Professional Liabilities, Regulations, and Performance Criteria (Whitney Library of Design, 1979) established Reznikoff as a leader in the field and helped define interior design as a professional discipline. In 1986 Reznikoff, who is active in CSI, ASID, IBD, and NFPA, was awarded ASID's coveted Human Environment Award.

Indispensable resource for interior designers & ID students!

Why search through a dozen books for the interior design information you need? Go to this book first and save time and aggravation.
BE FOREWARNED: this is NOT a fluff-filled, "decorators" coffee-table book! If you're looking for "101 Ways to Make Slipcovers Work for You" then don't buy this book!
But if you're a serious, hard-core interior designer, read on: This book is jam-packed with useful information, ADA requirements, building code standards, and relevant examples. Its clear, concise format and excellent index make it easy to find what you're looking for.
I refer to it for literally every project I work on, first as a student and now as an interior designer. I consider it to be the most valuable reference book I own.
This book is worth many times more than amazon.com is charging for it. If you're serious about interior design, you will never regret buying this book.

Great guide book for interior designers and students.

Do you need to have a fundamental guide book for interior design?(I am talking to Interior designers, not interior decorators).
Get this book. You will find any information or the specification you need to design your space in this book. From basic space plan rule to good example of space plans by each category, Light specification, Furniture by period and millwork standards, Door specifications, ADA requirement for different conditions, and whatever you need, you will find it.
Reznikoff showed his(or her)drawings by each cales, so that you can get the specific dimensions you need from the drawings in this book.
Great resource book. You will find this book very useful even when you work like me.
This is my interior design bible and I bet it will be same to you.

This one needs to go permanently out-of-print and be forgotten

This book is out-of-date, poorly written, poorly organized, and a complete waste of one's money, time, and effort. The graphics are inconsistent and poorly done, and it is a nightmare trying to make sense of technical information provided by Ms. Reznikoff.

This reference has been eclipsed in light-years by Maryrose McGowan's book "Interior Design Graphic Standards", which is now considered THE reference book of choice and the Gold Standard in its class. Use your money wisely and opt to purchase McGowan's publication instead of this one.

A Call to Action for Government IT!!

This book is an excellent resource for those brave individuals who realize that "the way we do things in Government" is just not going to cut it anymore.

The book provides a look into successful government projects that chose to use agile techniques. Some of them were last ditch efforts to save a repeating failure where hundreds of millions of dollars were spent with no derived benefit. That should make every tax payer angry!! But seeing how adopting new techniques can change the game gives you a view into what is possible.

If you're looking for easy answers to everything, you won't find it in this book or anywhere else for that matter. Taking on an agile transition in either the public or private sector takes bold leadership and a willingness to learn. That's what this book stresses. It provides a view into the challenges that government agencies in different countries faced as they did this.

I have been involved in a number of transitions in US Government agencies, none of them were easy. I would classify them as all out battles. People get very emotional because it rips at the very heart of the culture. The organizations that took on the fight did very well and added to the growing number of success stories. Many are still face-to-face with the enemy within, and their fate is yet to be determined. Perhaps this book will give them a bit of hope for the future.

We are in for a very long journey of change in government agencies as they begin to adopt these methods. They certainly highlight the huge amount of waste involved in the procurement, development, and deployment of IT systems using traditional methods. Consistent small steps forward are the best way to begin these transitions. Sometimes a pilot project or a project run "under the radar" is the best way for the learning to begin.

I highly recommend this book and am going to make this required reading for my clients in government organizations.

A must read for goverment IT projects

My initial thought was that this was just another book about Agile Project Management complemented with some study cases for government agencies, I was totally mistaken, this is indeed a great book that covers real case studies in several countries and for very large implementations like the FBI Sentinel project.

These case studies just provoke the reader and keep him/her interested for reading the rest of the great material that this book has to offer. It's no secret the great expenditure of tax money that governments put to backup IT projects but what these cases studies made more than evident is that money is not the only enabler. On the same venue, well founded government projects are lacking agility and that is hindering their ability to deliver value.

This book provides hope for all those government projects and actors that can turn they look into more efficient ways for working close to the end user and deliver incrementally usable products. Much transformation is needed inside government officials and IT departments and for that this book offer nine Agile Leadership Behavior closely aligned to the Agile Manifesto. These behaviors if successfully implemented could turn disastrous projects into successful ones; what is even more important, government IT personnel can also deliver high quality software in shorter periods of time like their cousins in the IT private sector are already doing.

The big caveat is the rigid and bureaucratic structure that many governments enforce in their ranks. Brian did a great job describing 6 barriers that prevent Agile from success in government IT projects. The mega-project mania really caught my attention because we're so accustomed to think that everything that governments do come in mammoth size. Smaller, faster and better seems to have been lost for the sake of complexity; this book does a great job remind us all that there is excellence in simplicity and light weight methods.

Five years from now I think that this book will still be in my bookshelf as a key reference book. What is even more important, people who have read this book would have delivered successful projects produced in an energizing work environment enabled by Agile principles and values.

An excellent and timely book

This book is an excellent introduction to agile project thinking in government and is a very timely statement of the new logic required in public sector IT. It provides useful case studies and discussion of the desired agile behaviors and the practical barriers which must be overcome.

Executive confidence in ICT-enabled business transformation projects is at a low ebb around the world due to a wide-spread track record of project disappointments. Few executives are willing to be held directly accountable for an ICT project in 2012 - it is easier and less risky to obfuscate and spread accountability behind a vail of committees and mechanistic processes and methodologies. This abdication of responsibility is starving projects of decisive and accountable leadership and is a tragedy because ICT is a critical ingredient of public sector reform. Executives must "get their ICT mojo back" and regain confidence in their ability to manage successful projects. Agile project management is an executive issue - not simply a new approach to software development.

Brian Wernham provides five practical case studies which illustrate how agile projects can succeed within the constraints of public sector procurement and risk management processes. It can be done! He also discusses the 9 agile leadership behaviors which empower a fresh approach to project management: (1) satisfy the customer, (2) harness change to your advantage, (3) be incremental, (4) get the business and technical people together, (5) create trust through leadership as well as process, (6) work face-to-face, (7) set targets and reward real progress, (8) give your team space, and (9) pursue simplicity. These behaviors are a refreshing dose of common sense which can be applied to process-gone-mad ICT projects.

Wernham also confronts the common barriers to agile thinking by calling out addiction to process, mega-project mania, the lure of 'big-design-up-front' and traditional procurement and contracting models. These barriers to agile project approaches are also contributing factors to ICT project failures ... so confronting them explicitly is a double-win. We must shift the risk management approach away from attempting to enshrine success in process and contracts and towards enabling success through leadership and behaviors.

The crisis of confidence in ICT-enabled transformation projects in government will only subside when executives are once again willing to step up to being accountable for project success. Stepping up, however, is only safe when the executive has experienced a pattern of successful projects - this is the real secret of the agile project management approach. Shorter, more incremental and evolving, project phases enable executives to regain their ability to trust project managers to deliver useful solutions on time and on budget. This trust is a critical, and undervalued, ingredient of public sector reform. Executives should read this book!
