About the Author

JAMES WATT, captain and cofounder of BrewDog, was a fully qualified deep sea captain, having earlier completed an honors degree in law and economics. He traded in being a salty sea dog to start BrewDog in 2007, with Martin Dickie. He was awarded Great British Entrepreneur of the Year in 2014. Along with Martin, James hosts the reality TV show Brew Dogs on the Esquire Network, which airs in seven countries.

Good Unique/Anti Perspective with Caveats

As a business owner and punk from the foundation, this caught my eye.

PRO
I love the brand, can't get it here in the US, yet.

They have been wildly successful and often in high risk, balls out ways and there should be a lot to learn from high growth pioneers.

A lot of solid advice that is readily applicable; I agree with a lot of it, not all.

CON
The whole "At Brewdogs this is what we do/did and why we're so awesome/irreverent/unique/anti" gets old. NOTE TO JAMES: Punks communicate their point by helping the person see themselves in the story

You really can overdo the analogies and catch phrases. NOTE TO JAMES: Punks alter their approach to speak to the various ways people listen thus furthering their master plan.

Many times when explaining an idea James repeats it in a number of iterations as if he had written several ways to convey the message and just used them all. NTJ: Punks craft their message, distill it and push it for maximum effect.

You don't need to hammer it home by saying hammer, hammered, hammerhead.....please....stop....no really. NTJ: Punks have more than a hammer in their toolbox and yes sometimes we use a wrench as a hammer to hammer things. See what I mean =:-o

NOTE TO SELF: I have yet to write a book so there's that, and I did enjoy reading it and look forward to trying thier brew as soon as it is available.

A fantastic and easy read, chock full of common sense and humor.

Received last night, not completely through the book yet but rapidly devouring the material. I enjoy the way the book is written...straightforward, in your face, caution to the wind, type of advice. Obviously James knows what he is talking about as his business model is exploding in growth and his thinking certainly stokes the imaginative fires for entrepreneurs. This book is relevant not only to those interested in opening a craft brewery, but anyone who wants a fresh approach to starting a business in the modern age. I cannot wait to complete this book shortly and so far have nothing but positive things to say about the book. An easy read...written for those who want to get to the point quickly..and written in a way that smacks you in the face with common sense. Spend the money and read the book, you won't regret it.

Great reading for all craft beer fans and business people

As a craft beer fan, I’d heard and read some about BrewDog and James Watt, although here in California, I have yet to find their beer. Reading “Business for Punks” is a great way to get an education about the Scottish brewery that’s soon to open a big, shiny facility in Ohio. While Watt has a bit of a reputation for arrogance, I came away dazzled by his intelligence, writing and out-of-the-box thinking. He writes in a very entertaining style (so long as you don’t mind salty language and an in-your-face attitude). There’s no debating the tremendous financial success that Watt and partner Martin Dickie have had. Their Equity for Punks crowdfunding campaigns have brought thousands of investor/fans into the BrewDog fold.

If you’re into craft beer culture or employed in it, if you’re a business person, you'll get a lot out of this book.

How best practices and expert advice can help you and your associates make smarter decisions

In their classic book, Judgment: How Winning Leaders Make Great Calls, Noel Tichy and Warren Bennis assert that what really matters "is not how many calls a leader gets right, or even what percentage of calls a leader gets right. Rather it is important how many of the important ones he or she gets right." They go on to suggest that effective leaders "not only make better calls, but they are able to discern the really important ones and get a higher percentage of them right. They are better at a whole process that runs from seeing the need for a call, to framing issues, to figuring out what is critical, to mobilizing and energizing the troops."

Those who aspire to "discern the really important [decisions] and get a higher percentage of them right" will find the material in this HBR book invaluable. It is one of the volumes in a series of anthologies of articles that first appeared in Harvard Business Review. Authors of the ten articles focus on one or more components of a process by which to make bold decisions to challenge the status quo, support decisions with sufficient and compelling verification, avoid choices that justify previous bad decisions, evaluate risks and benefits with equal rigor, check for illogical reasoning (e.g. faulty causal relationships), test decisions with reliable experiments, foster and address principled dissent and constructive criticism, avoid or eliminate indecisiveness with clear accountability, and finally, expose unconscious or camouflaged prejudices and biases.

Having read all of the articles when they were published individually, I can personally attest to the brilliance of their authors' (or co-authors') insights and the eloquence with which they are expressed. Two substantial value-added benefits should also be noted: If all of the articles were purchased separately as reprints, the total cost would be at least $60-75; they are now conveniently bound in a single volume for a fraction of that cost.

I now provide two brief excerpts that are indicative of the high quality of all ten articles:

In "Conquering a Culture of Indecision," Ram Charan explains how and why achieving that change "is a matter of leadership. It's a matter of asking hard questions: How robust and effective are our operating mechanisms? How well are they linked? Do they have the right people and the right frequency? Do they have a rhythm and operate consistently? Is follow-through built in? Are rewards and sanctions linked to the outcomes of the decisive dialogue? Most important, how productive is the dialogue marked by openness, candor, informality and closure?"

For those who seek wider and deeper coverage of this subject, I highly recommend the aforementioned Judgment: How Winning Leaders Make Great Calls as well as Charan's Know-How: The 8 Skills That Separate People Who Perform from Those Who Don't and Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done, co-authored with Larry Bossidy.

In "Evidence-Based Management," Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert I. Sutton propose six specific strategies for producing, evaluating, selling, and applying business knowledge:

1. Stop treating old ideas as if they were brand new.
2. Be suspicious of "breakthrough" ideas and studies.
3. Celebrate and develop collective brilliance.
4. Emphasize drawbacks as well as virtues.
5. Use success (and failure) stories to illustrate sound practices, but nit in place of valid research method.
6. Adopt a neutral stance toward ideologies and theories.

To learn a great deal more about the power of evidence-based management, I suggest that you read two books by Pfeffer and Sutton, Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths and Total Nonsense: Profiting From Evidence-Based Management and The Knowing-Doing Gap: How Smart Companies Turn Knowledge into Action.
Other articles in this anthology I especially enjoyed include "The Hidden Traps of Decision Making" (John S. Hammond, Ralph L. Keeney, and Howard Raiffa), "Make Better Decisions" (Thomas H. Davenport), and "Why Good Leaders Make Bad Decisions" (Andrew Campbell, Jo Whitehead, and Sydney Finkelstein, author of Why Smart Executives Fail: And What You Can Learn from Their Mistakes).

A useful collection of Kotter's articles

Six of Kotter's articles published between 1979 and 1997 are prefaced by a substantial introduction under the title of Leadership at the Turn of the Century. The six articles are arranged in two groups of three, the first three grouped under Leadership and Change and the second under the heading Dependency and Networks. The first part contains the famous articles "What Leaders Really Do" and "Leading Change: Why Transformation Efforts Fail", which was the article behind the author's subsequent book "Leading Change".
I seem to be in a minority in thinking that Kotter's views of leadership are over-rated. Although his commentary recognises complexity, his prescriptions seem to me to be instrumental, linear and unduly inwardly focused. He takes a very analytical view of an intensely human art. One of the central features of successful leadership is passion, and another is a strong and well articulated sense of values. The author recognises both, but does not appear to be engaged by them. They appear to be treated as merely two more ingredients in the mix. Above all, it does not ask the questions that are becoming so dominant - questions about societal values, about balancing the need for profit with issues of sustainability and even about the role of the corporation in a globalised world.
Having said that, there is a lot of good material available. His '8 steps' are sufficiently well known not to need repetition, and the article "What Leaders Really Do" is a good summary of the distinction between leadership and management concerns.
The introduction is written largely around ten 'observations', which add up to saying that leadership and management are different, that high complexity and high rates of change make leadership increasingly important, with a large part of the leadership role being concerned with building vision, providing inspiration and building networks of relationship.

The analytical person's guide to leadership

I look at the other reviewers comments and realize that there's another perspective. One that I think I may share with others who are not the other reviewers.
There's a niche of people out there who are "intuitive / analytical" people. The works of other leadership / management "gurus" seem, well, mystical or overwhelmingly positive.
I personally understand and practice the passion of leadership but personally had a hard time understanding the framework of human relationships and motivations that lead to most management hierarchies. In traditional management hierarchies, passionate people are also labelled as "over the edge". immature, unrealistic.
From an analytical engineering / scientist approach, what occurs in executive management just doesn't seem to make sense. Frankly, I'm blown away by the rampant "peter principle" in executive management. I've not understood why I who have significant leadership skills haven't made it into "the higher echelons".
John Kotter is the first author I've encountered who has been able to layout for me the framework of human interactions. He's the first author who feels to me like he is looking over my shoulder giving me useful guidance, not just pumping me up.
The article on "Leading Change, Why Transformation Efforts Fail" included in the book landed in my lap at a time when I'm attempting to lead cultural changes.
The chapter on "Managing and Power" helped me understand how my independent / contra-dependent leanings might actually be hindering me in a management hierarchy of over dependent managers.
I've gotten more condensed information from Kotter than from any other source to date. However, in this case, I must concur with one of the other reviewers: I'd like greater depth of information on how to better adapt.
Still, Kotter's terse, analytical perspective has been phenomenally valuable in giving me insights into my behaviors (that I'm not the only person who acts, feels, or believes in the things that I do) and a framework for understanding the behaviors of others.
Only time will tell if I've been able to take away anything of any real value and apply it successfully.

The Differencing Between Leading and Managing

In a long working career I have observed numerous instances of the high management manage companies with very few examples of them leading the company somewhere. I worked for Univac for instance, saw them merge with Burroughs, and watched as they turned two five billion dollar companies into one six billion dollar (with a loss in 2006 of almost $300 million). I watched Digital Equipment completely misunderstand the impact of the PC and go from a major player to be part of Compaq, then part of HP.

While this was happening, Microsoft and Intel were truly exercising the leadership that took the computer world through what Andy Grove (of Intel) called an inflection point.

This book is a collection of six essays. The first three discuss leadership. The second three discuss the management aspect. It's a quick easy read, and while there is little practical 'do it this way' advice, the overall impact is just what a true leader needs.

Interesting & Educational!

The Aztecs by Smalley is an easy and informative read that captures the readers mind with it's easy to use format and use of many photographs of ancient artwork to help bring the information to life. This volume, from High Five publishing has five chapters (covering the Aztecs search for an new home, the birth of a great city, a slice of life look at Tenochititlan, the arrival of the Spaniards, and the end of the empire) in 48 pages, the information is useful, informative and condensed, which is great for younger readers with shorter attention spans. The Aztecs also includes an epilogue, glossary (though words are defined on each page, at the bottom, making it doubly easy for young readers to learn new words or check the meaning on the bolded words without breaking away from the reading...a BIG plus in my book), bibliography, useful websites and addresses, and even an index!

We found The Aztecs by Roger Smalley to be a great introduction for young readers, bonuses for this text include pronunciation guide (when the word appears, so no flipping back and forth which can be frustrating for young readers), glossary (but also definitions ON page, near the bottom for quick reference, but not intrusive), descriptions on all the artwork photographed (excellent for young readers), and a bibliography and internet information for further reading/learning.

Overall I give The Aztecs: Rise and Fall of a Great Empire five stars, it's an excellent beginner resource that pulls no punches with regards to the more brutal aspects of Aztec life (human sacrifice), but presents it in a way that is minimally frightening (presented as a fact of their life and how they worshipped their gods at the time) yet is highly informative. I think this book is an excellent start to a lesson set on Central/South America or for young readers curious about the Aztec civilization! The recommended age range on this book is 4-8, but I don't know that ages 4-5 would really find this book interesting or that the material on blood sacrifice is appropriate (though parents are really the best judge of what their children are ready to learn about). My recommendation is for ages 6-10.

Victoria Pynchon is an attorney-mediator with ADR Services, Inc. in Century City and an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association in Los Angeles, California. She is the co-founder of She Negotiates Consulting and Training, a negotiation training and consulting service for women professionals, executives, managers and entrepreneurs. Victoria received her LL.M degree in Dispute Resolution in 2006. Her second book, Success as a Mediator for Dummies, was published by Wiley in April, 2012. Victoria lives in Los Angeles with her husband, attorney Stephen Goldberg.

Profoundly insightful and hilarious.

Victoria Pynchon has written one of those rare books that make you laugh and cry, shake and nod your head, and - most importantly - stop and ponder, all in the same chapter. This is not your run-of-the-mill book on negotiation and conflict resolution strategies. Rather, you'll find a familiar cast of characters, including the bully, the hero, and the victim, along with a description of what makes these folks tick, how they interact with us, and how we interact with them. What I found especially thought provoking was Victoria's insight that a bully, for example, does not exist in a vacuum - he needs someone to be a bully to (that would be us). Hence, a bully is not just a bad guy but a relationship in crisis. When viewed in this light, avenues to transform that relationship open up.

Victoria's humor, heart, and sophisticated prose make The Grownups' ABCs of Conflict Resolution a refreshingly different reading experience. This book will make you look at conflict differently. And that's exactly what we need for conflict resolution to take place.

A "liberating, freeing, and life-giving" perspective

Summary

In the Book, The Pentateuch, A Liberation-Critical Reading, Alice Laffey, uses the liberation-critical methodology to examine key passage within the Pentateuch. According to Laffey, the liberation-critical method sets Scripture free by looking at the Bible from a viewpoint antithetical to the biblical author's culture in which the he wrote. This culture is patriarchal and hierarchical, contrary to God's desire for society. Therefore, it is Laffey's intent in this volume and subsequent series, to give the reader a "liberating, freeing, and life-giving," perspective.

In other words, this perspective does not examine biblical narrative from mankind's (the author's) viewpoint, synonymous with a world ruled by and for men. On the contrary, Laffey explains the narrative from a feminist's presupposition, emphasizing the role women have within the Bible. Additionally, she emphasizes nature's role and the animal kingdom within her selected passages from the Pentateuch. Using her own translation, Laffey covers important topics from this perspective surveying the key passages in a running commentary format in three parts (although she does not present the Scripture sequentially).

Analysis of the Strength

Laffey writes at a popular level. Her commentary style is simple and easy to follow. She clearly makes her points, while reminding her readers to interpret the biblical text within the confines of God's design for society. One example of this historical viewpoint is her explanation of Leah's rape in Genesis chapter 34. On page 99, she informs readers of the benefits for the Deuteronomic rape law. She helps the reader understand the historical context apart from his or her own contemporary misunderstanding or prejudices (which is the goal of her writing).
She writes convincingly, even subtle at times (a trait which is also considered a weakness), and in good order. By dividing the book into three parts, she is able to arrange the biblical narrative to illustrate the liberation-critical method by subject matter. Therefore, once a reader becomes accustomed to her writing style, by recognizing the general layout of the book, the reader may effortlessly cover the reading in a short period. To help solidify her perspective, she offers a full range of Scripture illustrating her methodology.
Theologically, she provides insight into human's interdependency upon nature. However, more importantly, she illustrates how God holds humankind responsible for the world; humankind should take care of, not abuse, nature. Additionally, her viewpoint reminds the reader of the importance women take place within biblical history. In effect, she is challenging the reader's attitude of the status quo of women. For although the trend has vastly improved over the last 50 years, still too often western culture places an insignificant, or lesser, value on women (more apparent in cultures worldwide). Laffey's text reminds readers women do have value and worth in the sight of God and in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Analysis of the Weaknesses

Her strength of writing at a popular level lends itself to her simplistic writing. However, she may mislead some unwary readers. When she makes dogmatic statements, she offers little or no support. For instance, on page 13, unequivocally stating the Priestly source as responsible for the creation account, she offers a commentary of the creation advocating theistic evolution. The careless reader may not recognize her subtleness in both the acceptance of the Priestly source and of theistic evolution. This approach seems contrary to her careful delineation of the liberation-critical methodology found within the introduction. In this example, Laffey does not afford the reader an explanation for her stance or the opportunity to understand opposing arguments. Instead, Laffey gives herself carte blanch to indoctrinate the reader without any education.
Another example of her subtleness is the use of her own translation, which she casually admits to at some point within her book. This too can lead some readers to follow her interpretation without first thinking.

On page 82, she writes her translation of Genesis 3:16, "...in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." Notice her translation's subtle use of the conjunctive yet. This is in contrast to the majority of English texts which omit the conjunctive, treating the verse as two different clauses, "in pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband." Her translation is suspect for it fits too well within her hierarchical paradigm. It begs the question of whether she presupposed her own values and beliefs into the text, eisegesis, instead of using good use of exegesis.

One more example illustrates a similar weakness, where Laffey fails again to give any other explanation other than her own commentary. On page 130, writing about God and man's relationship to nature, she subtly writes the plagues in Exodus as "traditionally described as miracles..." Instead, she labels the plagues as unusual natural disasters. Rather than looking at all possibilities for the plagues (miracles, natural events caused by God, etc.) she fails to discuss fully these events. Instead she quickly dismisses the events, valid or not, as irrelevant to her point. Meanwhile, she already made another point; maybe there is some embellishment on the author's account of the actual events.

Lastly, unless a reader is really in tune with the liberation-critical methodology, the reader can quickly lose his or her interest in the book. Any reader, familiar with the biblical narrative Laffey uses, can quickly scan through the Scripture and logical guess where Laffey's points head. Perhaps this is her intention, to keep things simple and clear, to the point. Maybe she over simplifies. For instance on page 126 she writes, "Human person ..." Are not all human beings persons? However consistent in the simplistic nature of her book, the text drags onward, especially when Laffey's points become redundant without saying anything new or substantial.

Contributions of the Book

Many liberal authors have written about the Bible ranging from ethics to Laffey's liberation-critical method in The Pentateuch. For the seminary student, or anyone else interested in different opinions about Scripture, Laffey's book offers a viewpoint not often mentioned in conservative circles, the feminist perspective. Yet, if the preacher is to understand his listeners in a postmodern culture, such writings become valuable. From the skeptic to the sincere at heart, on any given Sunday morning a preacher may stand behind the pulpit to bring God's Word, only to find this wide variety of attitudes.

The Pentateuch allows the preacher or teacher to understand and appreciate (not necessarily agree) these different viewpoints. In fact, because the church is a cross section of society, there just may be people within a particular church who hold a feminist and liberal theological mindset. As such, being sensitive to such viewpoints helps a preacher to meet people where they are, bringing them to a better understanding of their relationship with God.

About the Author
Clear Englebert began working in retail at Montgomery Ward in Huntsville, Alabama when he was fifteen. Still a teenager, he became manager of the paperback department of Bookland's largest store. At nineteen, he opened his first Huntsville bookstore, called A Good Book Store. In 1978, Clear founded Books as Seeds, and in 1989, Opening Books (a 501c3 library and gift shop). He has managed at Green Apple Books (San Francisco's largest independent bookstore), at Pearly Gates Natural Foods in Huntsville, and at Ohana O Ka `Aina Natural Foods in Kona, Hawaii.

With decades of experience in retail visual merchandizing, Clear began a career as a feng shui consultant in Hawaii in 1995. He moved to San Francisco in 1996 to further his feng shui education. His first best-selling book, Feng Shui Demystified, was originally published in 2000 and was followed the next year with Bedroom Feng Shui. They have appeared in four languages and, after a decade, have been reissued in revised and expanded editions. Clear teaches feng shui in Hawaii and California and consults on homes, gardens, and commercial spaces.

Bravo! I read Feng Shui For Retail Stores in two short sessions and felt pleased to see that I include many of the suggested practices in my business, but I also gleaned several new concepts even after more than 37 years in retail. Clear Englebert has filtered and condensed his retail experience into a highly readable and concise guide that can be applied to a new business starting up as well as any established store. Many small but important details of customer service and daily procedures are discussed. I have asked my employees to read this book and recommend it highly to anyone in retail.

Great book that helped us make important shifts in the energy at our store

This is a really solid little book on retail feng shui, and I thought I knew a lot about feng shui - but I absolutely learned some things in this book that we have put to use in our store, and I feel they did improve the energy in the store and sales. If you manage, own or do displays in a retail store, this is a great and informative read that will have you looking at your store through new eyes, and I bet you anything you will be making a few changes afterwards! Very insightful, easy to understand, and she covers both simple/small changes and major changes you can make to correct the most common retail feng shui blunders.

Very informative. I have the Kindle version of the 8th Edition, which was required for class. Since it was so informative, I saw the book at a good price and grabbed it (the 7th edition) to add to my permanent library.
