An absolute MUST for grayscale enthusiasts!!!

Wow!!! Nikki has set a new standard for coloring book artists across the world with this amazing and special book! Not only are you getting 20 beautiful images of women of various fantacy, you get three and a half pages of instruction on how to color grayscale, what materials you can use, basic colored pencil techniques, basic marker techniques, what colors to choose, and the best way to blend colored pencils on top of a grayscale image. Nikki also took the time to explain the paper she choose specifically for this book. The book itself ihas a glue binding. There is also a paragraph about the book with a link to her grayscale coloring website where you will find many more tips, tutorials, and examples of grayscale coloring. Now to one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE parts of the book. For every picture in the book, you will find a small 3x4 colored image for your coloring inspiration AND two more of the images uncolored so that you can play with your color choices before you color your full sized image. How neat is that?! No more regretting color choices halfway through a picture! You can use one for pencils or watercolor pencils and the other for marker! This is not only a coloring book, its a coloring lesson book with invaluable tips and techniques tried and true by Nikki herself. In this edition, The Beginner's Edition, the pictures are slightly darker which means using even a single color brings out many different shades. It's also a great way to practice your shading before you move on to her other edition of this book, The Advanced Edition, where the pictures are lighter giving you more freedom with shading and using more colors. Now that grayscale coloring is becoming more popular, there are more and more grayscale books out there but none of them have the care, time, and thoughtfulness of Nikki's book. It truly sets the bar for future grayscale books! This book is an absolute MUST for those who are already into or interested in trying grayscale coloring. It will bring you hours of enjoyment and you'll be amazed at what your finished work looks like! I was given my copy of this book in return for my honest and unbiased review. I highly recommend this book!

This book is worth more than 5 stars. She really thought of everything with the quality and the test images to try out color schemes and mediums before putting them on the actual picture. The pictures are beautiful and this book is just overall amazing. One of my favorite books.

A fantastic book for everyone, beginner to beyond!

This book is stunning and eyecatching. It is a standard size, 29cm x 21cm (11 x 8.5 inches) and glue bound. The cover is a glossy card, with a half coloured image from the book in a limited colour palette. 
The paper is not your standard self published paper- it is thicker and smoother, and much more suited to the image style in this book.
I had no trouble with pencils, and could achieve quite a few layers with wax and oil based pencils. I experienced no bleeding or shadowing with fineliners, but some heavy shadowing with markers. Images are single sided, so this isn't an issue. Make sure to pop a few sheets of paper behind the image to protect the next one. 

Images 
This book is one of a few grayscale books coming out recently, and is a fantastic example of a greyscale book done right. 
There are two versions of this book, the beginners edition, which I am reviewing here, and the advanced edition, which I will be reviewing next week. The beginners version has darker shadows and details to guide you, making it a great option for those new to greyscale or wanting an easier book.
The images are from the artists previous books, but rendered in greyscale, not black and white lineart. Images are surrounded by a black border, preventing them from entering the spine at all.
The introductory material is one of the great features of this book. There are 4 pages of greyscale tutorials, introducing you to the basics of colouring greyscale images. There are also some techniques for pencils and markers explained in this section. The artist has a huge amount of information, tutorials and product reviews on her website as well.
After the introductory material, there is a section with tester images. This is three small versions of each image - one with the artists original colours, and two blank versions for you to test media and colours before starting the full size version.
Intricacy and line length is a bit tricky to evaluate in a greyscale book, but the images do have mainly larger  areas with only a few intricate components. 

Health 
If you like fantasy, this book will be a great one for times of anxiety or pain. The imagery is the type that lends itself to distraction. If greyscale colouring is new to you, it is a great way to start with some simpler images. 
For times when your concentration is low, this book would be a great fit - the images don't require a huge time investment, and you can even colour the smaller tester images if you feel the larger ones are too much. 
Those with visual or fine motor impairments should not struggle with these images - there are few intricate areas, and the shadowing and depth means that these are forgiving of a slip of the hand. But as always, please check the images before you decide!

About the Author

David Kroenke has many years of teaching experience at Colorado State University, Seattle University, and the University of Washington. He has led dozens of seminars for college professors on the teaching of information systems and technology; in 1991, the International Association of Information Systems named him Computer Educator of the Year. In 2009, David was named Educator of the Year by the Association of Information Technology Professionals-Education Special Interest Group (AITP-EDSIG).

 

David worked for the U.S. Air Force and Boeing Computer Services. He was a principal in the startup of three companies, serving as the vice president of product marketing and development for the Microrim Corporation and as chief of database technologies for Wall Data, Inc. He is the father of the semantic object data model. David’s consulting clients have included IBM, Microsoft, and Computer Sciences Corporations, as well as numerous smaller companies. Recently, David has focused on using information systems for teaching collaboration and teamwork.

 

His text Database Processing was first published in 1977 and is now in its 13th edition. He has authored and coauthored many other textbooks, including Database Concepts, 7th ed. (2015), Using MIS, 9th ed. (2017), SharePoint for Students (2012), Office 365 in Business (2012), and Processes, Systems, and Information: An Introduction to MIS, 2nd ed. (2015).

 

Randall J. Boyle received his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Florida State University in 2003. He also has a master’s degree in Public Administration and a B.S. in Finance. He has received university teaching awards at Longwood University, the University of Utah, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He has taught a wide variety of classes including Introduction to MIS, Cyber Security, Networking & Servers, System Analysis and Design, Telecommunications, Advanced Cyber Security, Decision Support Systems, and Web Servers.

 

His research areas include deception detection in computer-mediated environments, secure information systems, the effects of IT on cognitive biases, the effects of IT on knowledge workers, and e-commerce. He has published in several academic journals and has authored several textbooks, including Corporate Computer and Network Security, 4th ed., Applied Information Security, 2nd ed., and Applied Networking Labs, 2nd ed.

A comprehensive analysis of "the most powerful, repeatable processes that create successful talent"

The claim by Marc Effron and Miriam Ort that they offer "the most powerful" processes that create successful talent is, at best, debatable. However, they do recommend a three-step process by which to increase value while reducing complexity of talent practices by integrating behavioral science, simplicity, accountability, and transparency within those practices. This process is eminently sensible but, of course, its effectiveness depends almost entirely on how well it is planned, executed, and then sustained by those who adopt it. Effron and Ort duly note, "Because talent practices work only if they are implemented, ensuring successful implementation must be a primary goal."

Most change initiatives fail, many if them the result of cultural barriers that James O'Toole so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." Changing talent practices is certain to create resistance. Effron and Ort identify four talent-building barriers: (1) reluctance to eliminate needless complexity, (2) inability to create value, (3) unwillingness to stay current with cutting-edge research, and (4) reluctance to be transparent and accountable. The material provided is based on four assumptions with which I wholly agree: the available and relevant science works, only effective implementation matters, managers want to succeed, and finally, transparency and accountability guarantee results. OPTM can generate verifiable evidence to support these assumptions and thereby eliminate the aforementioned barriers.

With regard to the significance of "one page," Effron and Ort realize that the key form or process for every talent practice can be reduced to only a single page. However, as we all know, most electronic or print documentation about almost anything in business can be substantially reduced. For example, check out "American Express: A One Page Response to Challenging Times" (Page 19). Throughout their narrative, the co-authors make skillful use if several reader-friendly devices. It is important to keep in mind that Effron and Ort are sharing their own experiences with OPTM and base their observations and recommendations on real-world situations. Their insights are empirical rather than hypothetical or theoretical. The process is a framework within which each reader must formulate what is most appropriate to her or his own organization's needs, interests, resources, limitations, and strategic objectives. Moreover, I presume to add that an OPTM program will always be a "work in progress," sustainable to be sure but dynamic, responsive to change, and subject to frequent and rigorous evaluation.

At GE, the CEO selects his successor and Reginald Jones selected Jack Welch in 1981. His only advice: "Blow it up." The elegant and patrician Jones correctly realized that the company had become complacent and needed someone like Welch (scrappy, profane, volatile, confrontational) to lead it next. Welch became known as "Neutron Jack" as he sold off under-performing companies and eliminated under-performing executives. Attracting and retaining peak performers was one of his highest priorities. He devoted at least 20% of his time to mentoring and coaching high-potentials in middle management. I mention all this by way of suggesting that a methodology such as OPTM, if established and maintained properly, will accomplish two immensely important business objectives: it will attract high-potential candidates and then develop them and their associates to become high-impact workers at all levels and in all areas.

Here are two quotations that, I think, provide an appropriate conclusion to this review. First, from Peter Drucker: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Hence the importance of focusing on what is most important. Now this observation from Albert Einstein: "Make it as simple as possible...but no simpler." Obviously, Marc Effron and Miriam Ort agree.

Wow finally a WorkForce Talent management book that makes sense

After 18 years in the Workforce solutions field I have finally found a book on Talent management that made sense. One page is a refreshing departure from the same old. This book is filled with great ideas that I have been able to utilize right away in my business practices. Must buy if you are looking for immediate ideas and solutions to your companies workforce solutions

This book delivers

I am a Talent Management consultant with ten years experience with competency models/assessment tools/assessment centers/training. Among all the books I read, I find this book the most practical and thought provoking in the same time. Inspired by the book, I have redesigned our engagement survey, and I am redesigning our 360 tool according to the principles recommended by Effron and Ort. I always believed in manager friendly solutions, and the book gave excellent ideas how to improve my tools. Great ideas also around implementation and driving accountability. I also highly appreciate the concise style and the clear stand of the authors on many controversial issues. I highly recommend the book for consultants, HR/OD professionals, and high level managers who really care about talent. I believe reading the book will inspire many to change things around their talent management practices. My only warning would be not COPY/PASTE every specific suggestion as it is recommended, even though it is based on research, because some may not be suitable in all companies. For example, the authors recommend the manager should set the target for the employee instead of participatory goal setting. That works in general, but only if the manager truly understands the context of the employee's work, which is not always the case, e.g. in virtual teams, cross-border operations, complex technical work, etc. Or if you start from scratch, and your managers' soft skills are low, implement the practices one-by-one, not at once. So use the principles with judgement - but do use them! All in all, a truly remarkable book that has the potential to "change the world" of talent management in many companies.

Catherine Clinton earned her undergraduate degree in Afro-American studies from Harvard University and her Ph.D. in history from Princeton. She is the author of many historical works for children and adults, and has taught African American Studies at Brandeis University, Brown University, Harvard University, and Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland . Mary Boykin Chesnut's Diary from Dixie is a classic of Civil War era literature

Mary Boykin Chesnut was born into a wealthy South Carolina family.She grew up on a plantation receiving a good education in Charleston. Mary married James Chesnut when she was seventeen years old. Her husband served as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. The Chesnuts were childless. The American Civil War war destroyed their fortune. Mary's words will live forever in the hearts and minds of all who read her diary. Mrs.Chesnut was a friend of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his charming wife Varina. Chesnut comments on her relationships with the Davis family and a panoply of famous Southerners whose homes she often visited. Mary was a bookish woman who enjoyed the novels of Dickens, Trollope, Thackery and George Eliot among others. She enjoyed parties, eating out and dancing. She was a sociable woman who loved good food and gossip. She did not care for Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and was a strong Southern patriot. Mary had a good relationship with her slaves but considered them inferior to whites. In this attitude she mirrors the prejudices of her time. Her diary is a treasure trove of memorable quotes and observations about the Southern war effort and the people of the Confederacy. I include a smattering of her sage and witty remarks to give you the flavor of her diary entries:
"...Jackson whose regiment stood so stock still under fire that they were called a stone wall."-p. 78
"...Beauregard writes that is army is upon the verge of starvation..."-p. 85
"People avoid great talkers, men given to monologue, as they would avoid fire,famine or pestilence."-p. 105

Mary Chesnut's (1823-1886) diary was composed by a true Scarlet O'Hara! Mary and her family suffered through the tragic American Illiad. In her experience we see reflected the tragedy of the southern homefront. By reading this book with attention the reader will have illuminated:
a. the life of Confederate women and the Southern home front during the Civil War
b. A history of the war told from an observant woman. Her diary covers events from the fall of Ft. Sumter to surrender in 1865. I wish Mary Chesnut could have met Jane Austen! What a conversation that would have been between two brilliant authors of sparkling prose!
c.Witty comments on Confederate life in Richmond Virginia and Chesnut's native South Carolina. Her husband James was a US Senator from South Carolina prior to the war and later seved as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. Mary lived in various cities during the war: Camden and Columbia South Carolina; Richmond Va.; Lincolnton North Carolina.
Any college course on the American Civil War would be strengthened by adding this essential diary to the curriculum. A beautifully rendered account of a suffering women in a time of deep sorrow and death in our American story.

Civil War Diary

An insightful and articulate journal, from the point of view of a wealthy Charleston woman who knew or met...though her statesman, and later, military husband...many of the main players on the confederate side. She also travels though the south from Charleston as the war progresses. All I can say, for those true civil war buffs, it's well worth the read. I think it's essential. In fact it's a good read for anyone.

Chestnut personally knew Jefferson Davis for example, and reports not only his conversations but his state of mind and deeper moods. It was almost as if, he had a grip on the short odds the south faced, and while others were cheering initial victories, Davis maintained a more reserved and cautious tone...sometimes bordering on melancholy. This Chestnut reports with honesty and sensitivity.

With insight, intelligence and real nuance, she reports on important issues like rights of states, slavery, economics, as well as her ideas of honor, virtue, victory, defeat, and mercy. She speaks from a southern perspective, but never shirks from the hard veracity of Dixie's deteriorating prospects. Her commentary upon African slaves is quite powerful: "People talk before them as if they were chairs and tables. They make no sign. Are the stolidly stupid, or wiser than we are; silent and strong, biding their time?"

Fascinating

As I grow older, the history of our country becomes more interesting. Mary Chestnut has contributed greatly in my opinion to the history of the Confederacy and living conditions during that time period. Reading this book is almost like living through those times with Mary Chestnut. Her words and opinions live on in this diary and it makes for fascinating reading. I have seen bits and pieces of her diary before even in history books and am so glad to have the entire diary now. It is amazing.

The Early Roots of the Russian Civilization

This book by Simon Franklin is an excellent volume to precede the reading of the two important books by John Fennell ("The Crisis in Medieval Russia: 1200-1304 C.E." and "The Emergence of Rus: 1300-1359 C.E."). As such this book deals with the early Slav tribes and the Vikings which formed modern Russian Society. Of course the largest root or the main tap root in the mass of roots that formed Russian civilization is the Kievan Society that really began with Vladimir of Kiev near the end of the tenth century. This book spends much time and space on the important Kievan State and continues up to the coming of the Mongols to the future Russian lands in 1238 C.E., thus setting off the "Crisis" that is alluded to in the first book by John Fennell cited above.

Outstanding

I can't speak or read Russian and I'm not a trained specialist in Russian history. All I am is a person who is fascinated by the history of that great nation and people. And this book seems to me to be pretty close to essential for anyone who shares that interest.
The Emergence of Rus tells of the origins of the Russian people and the first great Russian state at Kiev. Given that few written sources are available for the time period, this book relies heavily on archaelogical information early on. Such written sources as exist are compared and contrasted and the conclusions drawn seem eminently reasonable. Even though there is a lot of archaelogical data presented in the first part of this book, it is by no means dry. Franklin and Shepard have a interesting story to tell and they tell it very well. I found The Emergence of Rus to be a very good read, something I'll definitely go back to.
If you are interested in Russian history at all, this book is highly recommended.
