About the Author

Edited by

Rhona Flin, BSc, PhD, FRSE, FBPsS, holds the chair of Applied Psychology and is the director of the Industrial Psychology Research Centre at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. She was involved in the NOTECHS project to develop a non-technical skills rating tool for pilots, and supervised the ANTS, NOTSS, SPLINTS and ANTS-AP projects. She was awarded the Roger Green Medal for Human Factors in Aerospace (Royal Aeronautical Society) and the John Bruce Medal for Behavioural Science in Surgery (Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh). Her current research is on non-technical skills, surgeons’ intra-operative decision making and senior managers’ safety leadership.

George G. Youngson, CBE, MBChB, PhD, FRCPEdin, FRCSEd is an emeritus professor of paediatric surgery at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He is a past vice president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is the founder of its Patient Safety Board. His interests and contributions have included re-configuration of children’s surgical services in Scotland, surgical education, and clinical human factors as they affect surgical performance. He has been involved in the delivery of the NOTSS masterclass in various continents, including Asia, Europe, Africa and North America.

Steven Yule, MA, MSc, PhD, is an assistant professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr Yule is an Organizational Psychologist and Human Factors scientist. He has been involved in the development of a number of assessment tools including NOTSS, SPLINTS and the Surgical Leadership Inventory (SLI). He has led the development of curricula in non-technical skills for surgical trainees and practising surgeons in the United Kingdom and United States. Dr. Yule is the director of education & research at the STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation, Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where the current research focus is on demonstrating the impact of surgeons’ non-technical skills on process and outcomes, and implementing scalable interventions to enhance patient safety. He is the vice chair of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) committee on non-technical skills and also on faculty at both the Center for Surgery and Public Health and Ariadne Labs for Health System Innovation, at Brigham & Women’s Hospital/ Harvard School of Public Health.

The essay on Pan's Labyrinth is not long, but has some great insight into the film. If you are someone who simply wants to get as much from the film as possible and would enjoy a deep understanding of it, I recommend it.

Dark Fairy Tale

This book was surprise to me since I thoroughly enjoyed the movie so long ago. It is not an easy movie to get into but if you like dark fantasy, fairytales and myths this one will be right up your alley. The book is a lot harder to get into than the movie but most people will appreciate that it is a companion to the movie itself explaining the connection between two worlds, reality and fantasy/myth as seen through the eyes of a very human young girl, Ofelia. It also shows us the cultural division between people and their struggle to survive in an ongoing revolution that is tearing the country apart. It goes in depths behind the characters, explaining them and perhaps why Guillermo Del Toro(GDT) has a detachment toward some violent scenes and not others. The time period is set in 1944 five years after Spain's civil war, the so called Peace Years. But there are still people fighting against the fascist regime and this movie also gives us a taste of what life is like under brutal dictators that kill without passion, compassion or even interest other than not wanting to be bothered when they have to face those they deem trouble makers. It is very dark fantasy and not meant for children as Ofelia tries to find a balance in the world above but find a way into the world below but only after she completes 3 terrifying test.

Perfect addendum to the movie. If you have not seen the movie, watch it first. You will just feel left out of things if you read the book first. Do not get me wrong, Read the Book, but just know that you have to watch the movie to get the full picture and experience. You will love it.

A very thorough and informational book

My husband just retired and now has time on his hands. This book on starting a pet sitting service combines the best of every thing you need to know about starting any home-based business. It is well-written in an easy to understand step-by-step format and was just what my husband needed to get him started on his next career! Again, it is very thorough and informative and the most reasonably priced I have seen anywhere.

Definitely "Not" what I expected on this topic

I wanted to get a glimpse of how someone. would describe deception and psychological warfare, mind manipulation. I picked up this book for a read. I am coming from a high degree in forensic psychology; therefore, I like to read factual books on the subject. I did not find truth anywhere in these pages. This was very sad and I was a bit uncomfortable with the way this topic was portrayed to the unaware public.

I took some time to write this review and thought about the ideas the author was trying to present, so I was not coming from an angry vie appoint. Just trying to defend the psychological field and be helpful, for people that are not into the subject.

This had no facts; no real data for me to go further to see the sources for confirmation. The Author mentioned two psychologists in the
look. There were no links; in fact, I could not find any information on them or the author herself. Nothing! I wanted to see the author's background in psychology. No internet presence on amazon or Goodreads. If there is something - please let me know where to find something about the author.

The book reads like a dictionary with no space in between to digest the information. The book does not do justice to the field, while spewing opinions that are not correct, glimpsing their own bias about the subject. This, in my opinion is wrong.

I was very surprised to read the 5 star reviews that are on her book. I could (literally) not finish the book, ( skimmed through the rest...hoping for some truths). This bothered me that much about the information she is touting about this delicate field, and people are reading this while being misinformed about the subject. The Author also has books in the marketing and social media sites. Totally different ballgame.

Dyer states " Propaganda and manipulation targeted at children are thus the most effective and the most insidious, and the solutions cannot come through a rearrangement of chemicals from one form to another, based entirely on the evolutionary biological model." (2015).

In the American Psychological Association website, Morris and DePaulo found, "Deception cues are debated- Are appearances deceiving? The evidence is mixed. DePaul and co-author Wendy Morris, a psychology graduate student at the University of Virginia, conducted a meta-analysis into the possible predictors of deception for "Deception Detection in Forensic Contexts" (forthcoming from Cambridge University Press ). They warn readers that detecting deception is an inexact science, but note an association between lying and increased pupil size, an indicator of tens
ion and concentration. Second, they find that people. listening to liars think they seem more nervous than truth-tellers, perhaps because their voices are pitched higher. And liars are more likely than truth tellers to press their lips together. On the other hand, they note, liars don't appear to be more fidgety, nor do they blink more or have less relaxed posture. According to DePaulo and Morris, only when liars are more highly motivated--- when the stakes are higher---do they seem unusually still and make notably less eye contact with listeners." (APA, Adelson, 2004).

Very interesting and surprising

I thought that this book will be some paranoid conspiracy theory nonsense, but it actually isn't so. It is an interesting and well-thought out book that provides a number of things to think about, especially if you are new to this kind of things like I am.
I particularly liked the part of the book where author explains how we are manipulated every day. I cracked up when I read about faces on inanimate objects, but that is so true. The book is full of interesting nuggets like this, I really recommend it to anyone, it doesn't matter if you believe in manipulation and social engineering. Check it out.

Mind control is all around us. There are eight chapters here in this book. The second chapter described about psychological warfare. The chapter of three described about manipulation. This book has also described the type people who are most easily manipulated. Most of the people don't like the idea that religion, politics and sports are going to be considered as mind control. I am really enjoyed reading this book..It's so interesting and informative. I recommend to everyone!
