The star of my keeper shelf!
By 3-5 book a week habit
Caution: this is no summer beach read.

It's a beautiful romance about some of the beautiful people, but with uncommon depth and complexity.

Phoenix Falling is harrowing and deeply affecting tale of emotional annihilation and painful recovery, and, unlike in most romance novels, love is neither panacea nor placebo. It is, rather, a sword of redemption requiring both courage and strength of character to wield it.

This is hands down my favorite Mary Jo Putney novel, with her signature depth of characterization and compassionate insight, and her wise understanding of love's power to facilitate the healing of even the deepest wounds.

One complaint: I don't particularly like the cover for this member of the series. It doesn't really do the characters justice. To me, he in particularly looks completely incapable of the strength of character which Putney allows all her characters to discover in themselves.

So, don't be fooled by the party animal cover models. There's real, classic Putney inside.

One of my top 5 books ever

I read this story originally as The Spiral Path (and personally like that title better) years ago. And I probably reread it ever year or so since. It's that good. It's not an easy, or cheerful, happy, lighthearted read, but it's always amazing to me how much I get lost in the emotions of this book. It's not a comfortable read either. Many detail are hard to read. That's what makes this book so amazing to me, that even knowing the story and how much it makes me cry in many different places, and how unsettling it is to imagine someone actually living the life Kenzie did, I still reread this book over and over. It is a romance novel, and in the end the love between the Rainie and Kenzie is beautiful, and after all they went through, totally believabl, at least to me. And now that this review is done, that reminds me it's been awhile since I picked up this book, maybe I need the kindle version as well....

Well worth losing sleep over

I stayed up until after 2:30 AM - and it was worth losing sleep over. The characters were so great, the plot so compelling and the writing so good that I could not stop reading until the end. I loved the way Kenzie's secret wasn't revealed until near the end. And Ms. Putney didn't give the characters an easy out. They had to work for their happy ending. I have so many books on my Kindle to read, that I don't often read a book more than once. But I already want to read Phoenix Falling again, this time to savor the all the wonderful details. Excellent, excellent book.

About the Author

Alberto González (PhD, The Ohio State University) is professor and chair in the Department of Communication at Bowling Green State University. His research has appeared in various journals including Quarterly Journal of Speech, Southern Communication Journal, Communication Quarterly, Western Journal of Speech Communication, Intercultural Communication Studies, Women & Language, and Journal of Poverty.

Yea-Wen Chen (PhD, University of New Mexico) is assistant professor in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University. Her research addresses issues of cultural identities, ideologies, and social justice within intercultural relationships across local and global contexts. Her work appears in such journals as Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Howard Journal of Communications, and Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, and she also contributes invited book chapters and to online publications.

good narrative commentary on the Gospel of Matthew

This short book is part of a series on the Gospels, as the author presents them in her televised seminars. So, at times, it feels like you are reading a transcript from one of her lectures. However, the context and analysis is wonderful. Mrs. Vera Talbot wants to share with the reader the joy of a saving relationship with Jesus.

I loved this book. I have always been interested in books that explain the emphasis of the 4 gospels. This book was awesome and I Can not wait to read Mark, Luke, and John.

Great Supplement to the New QP Bible

Many of the most used problems in Quantum Mechanics were created by Russian physicists in the early 1960's. Without true quantum computing available perhaps for nearly a decade to come, formulating problems, then explaining answers, is extremely difficult! Dover re-publishes many of the oldies but goodies, but in this field, the oldies are also the current favorites, and just as tough as they were 50 years ago.

This book, and most like it, are pretty sketchy and need a LOT of outside help to "get." Exploring Quantum Mechanics: A Collection of 700+ Solved Problems for Students, Lecturers, and Researchers is the new monolith, or bible, of these types of problems, and is nearly 1,000 pages INCLUDING detailed explanations of how the problems are solved. Before 700, many of the little, cheaper books by Dover etc. were unintelligible.

Now that 700 is out, many others are within reach along with this one, including: Problems in Quantum Mechanics (Dover Books on Physics), Problems and Solutions on Quantum Mechanics: Major American Universities Ph. D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions, Problems in Quantum Mechanics (Dover Books on Physics), The Many-Body Problem in Quantum Mechanics (Dover Books on Physics), Problems in Quantum Mechanics: With Solutions, Problems and Solutions in Quantum Mechanics, and many others.

Taking the "cheap" Dovers (search problems in quantum mechanics on Amazon for more), you can add up to about 300 total problems with repetition, so you can see how the 700 text is truly amazing, and covers 1950 to today! By the time you buy 8 Dovers, you've spent what you would on the new 700 text, so depending on your need, I'd consider 700 if you really want one place to see them all, including the best solutions anywhere.

About the Author
John E. Branscum grew up in the small-town trailer parks and inner-city housing projects of Kentucky, Arkansas, and California. He is currently a professor of creative writing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a member of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs pedagogy committee, and text editor for Black and Grey Magazine. He is the recipient of the national Ursula K. Le Guin Award for Imaginative Fiction, several Academy of American Poets awards, and has made appearances in Best American Non-required Reading, and Best American Horror.

Wayne Thomas is the author of plays, fiction, and essays. He teaches creative writing at Tusculum College, a small school located in the northeast Tennessee mountains. He is editor of The Tusculum Review.

PREFACE

What if there were a standard set of core concepts for object-oriented analysis and design (OO A&D)? What if there were a prescribed set of diagrams for communicating these concepts? Imagine how much simpler our OO A&D world would be—not to mention the world of OO-CASE vendors. We could all speak a common OO A&D language, rather than some dialect based on a particular methodologist or OO-CASE vendor. I'm not sure such an event would ever meet everyone's satisfaction. Furthermore, I'm not sure that one fixed set of diagrams can (or should) express everything we need to say. But, a way to express most of our A&D knowledge is now available. With the OMG's Object Analysis and Design Taskforce (OA&DTF) a standard now exists for:
a common meta-model for maintaining our OO A&D knowledge,
a technique for exchanging this knowledge, and
a notation for expressing our OO A&D knowledge.



A Little History

Grady Booch was the first to organize an OO A&D standardization effort. In the spring of 1993, he asked a handful of major methodologists if they wished to create an OO A&D standard. (Jim Rumbaugh, Ivar Jacobson, Stephen Mellor, Peter Coad, and I were included.) However, assembling these people for even one day proved too daunting as we could only agree on a short breakfast meeting at OOPSLA Ô93 in Washington, DC. Since the idea of standardization was considered undesirable by the majority at the meeting, the standards movement floundered—but not for long.

In October 1994, Rational Software Corporation succeeded in hiring Jim Rumbaugh. With the combined force of Booch and Rumbaugh, Rational decided to produce its own standard approach, then called the Unified Method. Its rollout occurred at OOPSLA '95 in Austin accompanied by singing (Jim) and merriment (Grady). When Ivar Jacobson joined Rational about a year later, the resulting unified approach became stronger and broader. Soon, Rational's approach—now called the UML (Unified Modeling Language)—became a unification of more than Booch, Rumbaugh, and Jacobson. Literally dozens of other methodologists and organizations became part of an effort known as the UML Partners.



Enter the OA&D Task Force

By 1995, OO A&D unification and standardization were certainly in the wind and on June 29, 1995, an old special interest group was revived within the OMG (thanks to Richard Soley and Ivar Jacobson). This renewed special interest group became known as the Object Analysis and Design Task Force (OA&DTF) and was co-chaired by Mary Loomis and me. Its bimonthly meetings are usually attended by 30 to 90 individuals representing dozens of companies. After an initial period of data gathering and discussion in 1995, the OA&DTF submitted its first Request for Proposal (RFP) in June 1996. All submissions to this RFP were required to:
define a meta-model that represented the semantics of object analysis and design models.
define the OMG's IDL (Interface Definition Language) interfaces that enable models or model elements created by one tool to be accessed from another tool. The model access facility had to be either an import facility or a connection facility or both.
provide a set of notations for representing models.
include a "proof of concept" statement, explaining how the submitted specifications have been demonstrated to be technically viable.
accommodate evolution of models and incorporation of additional semantics over time.



Who responded to the RFP?

Those organizations that responded include: Hewlett-Packard, I-Logix, ICON Computing, IntelliCorp, IBM, MCI Systemhouse, Microsoft, ObjecTime Limited, Oracle, Platinum Technology, PTech, Rational Software Corporation, Reich Technologies, Softeam SA, Taskon A/S, Sterling Software (formerly Texas Instruments Software), and Unisys. On January 17, 1997, these companies coordinated their responses, resulting in six submissions. In the months that followed, the effort was unified into a single proposal. On September 1, 1997, all 18 organizations presented the UML proposal to the OMG.



Conclusion

In summary, the OA&D facility is expected to implement the interfaces that would enable tool builders to provide facilities for tool users to:
extend and augment a model produced by another conforming tool.
use a model produced by another conforming tool in the course of producing a different but related model.
Additionally, this RFP resulted in a standard notation for users to express their models.



A few years ago, such a facility was hoped for and dreamed about—but hardly considered feasible. Now, there is a standard defining the core concepts for OO analysis and design and a prescribed set of diagrams for communicating these concepts.

While this standard will not solve all our problems, it will reduce the Babel-ization surrounding OO A&D communications. Furthermore, it will provide a kind of Rosetta Stone for communicating various kinds of OO A&D specifications. We can then put more effort into what we're communicating—and not so much into how we communicate it. Imagine a world where an OO developer can spend less time in religious battles about notation and more time on the quality of communication.

Excellent explanation and easy to read

I recommend it to people wishing to strongly become familiar with OO. In comparison with "UML Users Guide", "OO Analysis and Design with C++ examples", "Applying patterns with UML ", "UML Distilled" this book explains OO at the good fundamental level and explanation is very sequential. You will understand OO approach step by step. However, this book is not for novice. Some experience is necessary. If you want just to get few basic concepts and start programming, then this book is not for you too. System Analysts, Architects and Team Leaders must read it.

The perfect cookbook for folks who live alone.

I love to cook and I love new cookbooks. I read a review of this one in our local newspaper about a month ago and I knew I had to have it. From breakfast to desserts, I have found many recipes I want to try.

The book has multiple features that I like. Chief ones are that the recipes call for ingredients normally stocked by cooks who enjoy preparing meals; they can be whipped up in a hurry and microwaved in minutes; and they taste good.
Many of them are prepared and baked in a 16-oz mug. That’s the size of my two-cup Pyrex measuring cup.

To date I have made Quinoa Chile, Crumb Coffeecake, Kale and Barley Soup, Tomato- Couscous- Chickpea Soup, Salmon Chowder, Antipasto Pasta, and Bread Pudding and I’ve had this book less than a month.

I’ve enjoyed each of these dishes. I am recently widowed and this book is helping me to continue to eat wholesome food because it is so easy to “stir it up.”

Great book

My wife and I have already used this book more than any cookbook we have bought in the recent years (and we buy a lot). Recipes are all pantry friendly, especially great for lunches and breakfasts. So much cheaper and healthier and interesting than canned soups, frozen dinners and the like. We bought one each for our single son and daughter in college. They are both using and enjoying their copies a lot, too.

The few mug meals I have tried so far are pretty good. I like that it takes only a few minutes to prepare and cook.
The ingredients are things I have, I don't have to get special foods or spices, I like that it makes one serving and I don't have left overs.
