About the Author
Nicole E. Brown is the Multidisciplinary Instruction Librarian at New York University, where she teaches research workshops to a variety of user groups and works to expand and strengthen the teaching role of librarians. She has given presentations, workshops, and led professional development training on four continents and has written for Library Journal and Internet Reference Services Quarterly. Her research interests include innovative teaching practices and incorporating new literacies into teaching and learning environments. She holds an MLIS from Pratt Institute.

Kaila Bussert is the Foundational Experiences Librarian at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo where she leads a foundational information literacy program. Her research interests center on the role of visual literacy across the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. She holds an MA in Near Eastern Studies and an MLIS from the University of Arizona.

Denise Hattwig is Curator of Digital Collections at the University of Washington Bothell Library, where she collaborates with faculty and students on digital scholarship projects, facilitates digital collection and repository development, and teaches archiving and interdisciplinary image use. Her research interests include student participation in digital collections, intersections of digital scholarship and repositories, visual literacy, scholarly communication, and data curation. She is lead author of ACRL's Visual Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. She holds an MA in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University and an MLIS from the University of Washington.

Ann Medaille is the Assessment Librarian at the University of Nevada in Reno where she coordinates library assessment efforts, teaches information literacy and research skills, and serves as the library liaison for education, art, anthropology, theatre, and dance. She holds an MA in Theatre from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an MLS from the University of North Texas. She has published articles relating to library instruction, visual and media literacies, information behavior, and reference services.

Entertaining and Easy to Follow

In Pretty Modern, Edmonds gives the history of plastic surgery in Brazil and talks about the cultural factors that have made Brazil the plastic surgery capital of the world. Edmonds explains that the large gaps in socioeconomic status and the fact that a middle class is virtually nonexistent has led many to seek out plastic surgery as a means to increase their capital. Edmonds argues that beauty and capital in Brazil are directly proportional. He supports this claim with several interesting examples of cosmetic procedures relating to race like the correction of the negroid nose.

Edmonds also touches on the fact that race is quite complicated in Brazil. For instance, many Brazilians describe themselves as being morena when a typical American would describe them as being black. According to Edmonds, many Brazilians identify as being morena because being black in Brazil really lowers ones chances of success. This explains why correction of the negroid nose remains a popular type of cosmetic surgery.

Edmonds presents the psychological reasons for cosmetic surgery as well. A common excuse that plastic surgeons use to perform cosmetic surgery relates to the self-esteem of the patient. Doctors argue that if a physical defect is corrected, then the patient's self esteem will increase and they will go on to live a happier life. Edmonds gives several examples of women that have had plastic surgery and support this approach to cosmetic surgery, especially women who have had plastic surgery to return their bodies to the state before childbirth.

The analysis that Edmonds presents in Pretty Modern is strong, and the examples of plastic surgery that he includes are both interesting and entertaining. The dialogue alone of Edmond's informants will keep most readers entertained. Edmond's argument is easy to follow, and I would recommend this ethnography to anyone who finds the topic of plastic surgery interesting or to anyone who just wants a fun read.

As a plastic surgeon practising in India , I had heard about the plastic surgery craze in Brazil. I was curious to know how a not so rich country like Brazil had so much demand for plastic surgery . Naturally I was glad to find this book and I did get my answers. This books is rather dull at places -but overall does justice to the subject.

Fun, Adorable Coming of Age Story With a Christmas Theme

I haven't read too many books with characters in this age range and the blurb really grabbed me so I snatched it up for a holiday read. I am so glad I did. I really enjoyed reading with Rusty Baker as the narrative (I just realized that I almost called him 'Dusty' Baker who was the coach of my favorite baseball team so forgive me if I slip and do that again later.). The author did a good job making me believe that I was reading the thoughts and words of a heart-warming young man that isn't the quickest on the uptake, but he sure had it where it counted most.

Oh and I gotta say that I really enjoyed the setting of this one since I grew up right there in the NoCal foothills so I saw it all perfectly when it was being described.

So anyway, on with my summary. Rusty has grown-up in an upper middle class household in the burbs with parents who seem to only consider him as a future success story for them and a way to be connected with all the right people. His grades are mediocre as are his sports gifts, but they see Berkley grad and lawyer. Rusty really tries to please them, but at the same time he's honest and worried that he's not measuring up. He's definitely not doing what makes him happy.

Fortunately, he has his sister and the kind maternal housekeeper who gives him some support. And then he makes a 'best' friend, Oliver Campbell, who he met as new transfer kid his senior year. Oliver is nothing like the other kids or his usual group of friends. Oliver's looks, family background and even sexual orientation make him not potential best friend material with Rusty's other friends or his parents, but he doesn't care. From the moment Oliver looked on Rusty's stupid friends with amused tolerance with that bright smile and Rusty takes up for Oliver against his friends, they are best buds. Oliver is so brilliant and bright that Rusty can only wonder what Oliver would want with a slow guy like him, but he holds tight to that friendship regardless.

At least he thinks they are until his last night in town before going away to Berkley. Oliver gives him the best kiss he's ever had and sends him away to think about that kiss and think about Oliver. So between figuring out how to survive as a pre-law student at Berkley with a horny roommate who'll do it with anyone and feeling so far away and alone from all he knows, he does think about Oliver and Oliver is his lifeline. Oliver helps him survive school- well survive period in some ways so when he comes home he owns up to what he feels for Oliver and that gets him thrown out of his home and disowned just before Thanksgiving.

Oliver and the rest of the Campbells are there to show him what family and love can be. Rusty embraces it and is determined to stand on his own two feet and have Oliver even if he has little to offer in return. Finding the perfect Christmas present and being able to offer something so simple as a bed are high on his list.

The plot is the coming of age and discovery story of Rusty. It was a gently paced story that brought out several emotions in me. I enjoyed how it wasn't easy, but it wasn't angsty either. I was a little bummed about the white people cliches since its not true of everyone, but I do get that some people are which is why we have the cliches. The way flawed characters grew even if it wasn't much like Rusty's parents was something nice. Oliver and his family are the family that everyone wants to be a part of and be friends with. And Nicole, Rusty's younger sister, was so fun. She adores her brother and totally supports him through everything. I loved seeing the brother-sister dynamic which gave extra depth to the story.

Even though this is all from Rusty's point of view, the other characters in the story shine through. He sees it all even if he doesn't get the significance of what he's seeing, but that's what he has Oliver for. These two are such opposites, but they are adorable together. Rusty has strong principles which is amazing considering the people who raised him and he is stalwart about things though he is a tender guy when it comes to love and feeling his way when it comes to a relationship with Oliver. Rusty takes his time arriving at truths and how he feels, but he does get there.
Oliver is so patient with Rusty. Oliver is uber-smart and is academically capable of so much, but he sees the value in Rusty. He's way ahead of Rusty about his feelings and who he wants, but he waits for Rusty to catch on. He champions Rusty and tries to make up for the lack in his life- well besides Rusty's kid sister, Nicole who's also there for him. I grinned with the early efforts of the two guys together. It was so authentic how they didn't just fall into bed and achieve sexual perfection nor did the daily aspects of their relationship just come together.

So when it finished, I found myself smiling big and happy that I got to spend some time with Rusty and Oliver for Christmas. Those who enjoy slow-paced character-driven coming of age M/M Contemporary Romance should give this one a try.

Remember that 20% of the proceeds go toward charity for the Ali Forney Center.

RUSTY BAKER IS NOW A STAR !!!!

I seemed to have realized I was in a semi dry spell from Amy Lane.....We have marvelled at her keeping us soo busy reading this year, I got this and realized how much I missed her... She has given us a Holiday Story I wouldn't have missed for the world.

Rusty Baker has to be one of the greatest characters Amy has written well since maybe....Oh there are too many, but you know what I mean. He's the kind that will stick with you like maybe Mikhail or Chase...Now you understand??? but definitely THE ONE.....

Rusty is the good looking, wealthy high school jock, the ones girls crush over, the one whose family has Big Plans for. Imagine him becoming friends with Oliver Campbell who is openly gay and from the `other side' of the tracks. Their friendship blossoms as Rusty needs help in his studies and Oliver is so smart Rusty's parents look away from looking down on him so he can help their son get into Berkley.

The story is from Rusty's voice as we see his incredible affection growing for Oliver, his fear of going away to school and failing as a son and living someone else's life; not his own. His grades are mediocre but his parents only want the Berkley Graduate and Lawyer. He and Oliver's new friendship alienate Rusty from the `in' group at school and they become inseparable. Rusty's sister Nicole is a joy and `gets it' and their loving housekeeper become the family Rusty savors....And then there is the kiss Oliver leaves him with before he leaves for school.....has awakened him wanting more. Rusty returns home for Thanksgiving to make decisions that will affect his life as he knows it as he chooses Oliver over family and is thrown out.

Rusty might be a little slow, Oliver already knows what he wants , but he will let Rusty take his time and figure it out. This is a coming of age story, truly a character driven story that only Amy Lane can give us in her writings. Okay there is angst....buut in her defense NO ONE Dies and it is a blessed holiday story that no one should miss. Truly

Christmas Kitsch - may contain spoilers!

I am giving this book 5 stars because I enjoyed the plot- I thought the main characters and the experiences they encountered were relatable. I did not so much enjoy the sexual scenes between Rusty and Oliver; I think that they could have been done with less detail, and that the story did not need so many of these scenes. There were several of them, and not all of them helped advance the plot. I also think that the story could have done well with less cursing and that type of language; however the two main characters were teenage boys that might speak like that if they had been real people.

However, I still give this book five stars because I enjoyed Rusty's character. He was a young man who needed time to admit to himself who he really was, but once he did, he was very happy with himself. I thought at times that Rusty went a bit overboard with telling Oliver that he didn't want Oliver to live with him because his small apartment was not a very nice place. I wish he had been able to see sooner that Oliver was so in love with him that he did not care where they were, as long as they were together. I did not think that Rusty was 'dumb' or 'not bright,' as he referred to himself as being. I simply think that he was not as experienced and perhaps not as mature as he thought he was.

Once again, there were elements of the story that I didn't like. But the characters were very relatable and fun to get to know, and I could imagine their experiences happening to real people. I would love to see a sequel to this book some day, to find out what happens to Rusty and Oliver in the future!
