Great title for the implementer & worker

I've read a lot of lean books - most are high on rhetoric, short on example, and woefully short on real life examples of tools. This book is the complete opposite. This is the down and dirty guide to getting things done - designing, implementing, and most importantly, sustaining a visual work environment to reduce motion and focus on getting things done.

Pros:
- It's not a list of "hey, I saw that." It's a fully developed system for designing & implementing visual controls. Lots of excellent, achievable processes for rolling out
- The rules for deciding who needs to know what, when, and how, are stellar. Asking a few simple questions can eliminate a lot of the non-visuality of the typical environment and reframe everything.
- It's totally focused on removing motion (you may call it waste.) - by ensuring the right types of information are in the right place
- This book contains concrete things that can be done. It's not a primer to buy the author's consulting services, or a thinly veiled sell. I appreciate that.
- Finally, and most importantly - the examples! Even if you're down the road of visual implementation quite a way, you'll find a lot to like in this book. I've found dozens of "duh!" items that I'm going to pursue with my operators.

Cons:
- A lot of the pictures are reused multiple times. That's OK, and explained in the book, but I would have loved to have seen even more examples
- It would be great for a website login to come with the book so we can view high resolution versions of some of the solutions. I really liked some of them and would love to, er, borrow, the ideas!

Chasing Metrics

With 25+ years of manufacturing experience, at different operational levels and exposure to various "improvement systems", I feel there still seems to be something missing. 5S is neat. Mistake Proofing is cool and Six Sigma is tight, but is it all enough? I’ve come to recognize that all our performance metrics simply boil down to being indicators of a job done right. If you’re doing work right you maintain on-time deliveries. If you’re doing work right you ensure low or no defects. If you’re doing work right you have reliable cycle times etc. So then why do companies, regardless of their manufacturing genre, continually find themselves relying on unscheduled OT? Why do we revert to inspecting quality in? Why do we continually pay expedites on materials and freight? The list of idiosyncrasies we undeniably and uniformly experience day in and day out is as painful as it is inexplicable. Obviously, there are many interconnected variables contributing to this, but may I be candid and suggest it could be because we honestly don't know any better? It seems to be proven by our reoccurring actions of doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to meet those “metrics”. The fact is, nailing targets is not necessarily a reflection of work performance as it ought to be.

I hope you can agree that truly effective manufacturing is not about what you are putting together but rather, it is about how expectations are communicated, how process steps are organized and understood throughout the whole company. It’s about providing a culture that can foster the correct behavior from all of us – management and associates alike. It’s about being honest with ourselves and with each other. There are proven, systematic methods of gaining sustainable growth, finding real margin and maintaining meaningful results for any employer willing to look beyond merely profit alone and instead look towards Excellence, that is inherently and wildly profitable in and of itself.

The “Improvement System” I highly recommend, is one pioneered by Dr. Gwendolyn Galsworth and is called "Work That Makes Sense". A thoughtful and complete training system and culture building philosophy that unites the mechanics of business, along with the psychology of our human behavior, providing the knowledge, principles and tools needed to implement workplace visuality at every level of the organization. What is workplace visuality? It cannot be adequately described in these few sentences, but it is vital information exactly when you need it. It is communication without interruption. It is clarification emerging from confusion. It is confidence that the expectations of work are being performed precisely as desired. It is, in her words, "The language of work". It is the infrastructure model your company can utilize to ensure that "What is supposed to happen does happen on time, every time, day or night because of visual solutions". For me this is the elusive, yet intuitively obvious aspect missing from our manufacturing worlds. Once experienced I’m confident you too will agree.

More Natasha Knight please!

Skye is a photographer for a tabloid paper, a job she's not necessarily proud of but it's a job and puts food on the table. She and a colleague are caught trespassing on the grounds of a posh mountain resort, where the head of the security team turns out to be Aidan, who was her older brother's best friend years ago, and who kissed her on her 18th birthday and then disappeared. He lets her go, with a warning that if he catches her sneaking around his mountain again, he'll spank her.

A year later, and she is again sneaking around the resort, trying to get pictures of a celebrity rumored to be there with his mistress. But this time she witnesses a murder before getting caught by security, who once again deliver her to Aidan.
Given that two Russian mob families are involved, and Skye's life would be in danger if they ever found out she'd taken pictures of them, Aidan makes Skye stay with him so he can protect her. And punish her.

I was drawn into the story very quickly. A tabloid photographer is definitely a sleazy profession, but Skye is a very likable character, though seeming younger than her age and pretty naive. Even while doing her job her conscience pricks her and she has misgivings, but a girl's got to eat, right? It's been ten years since Aidan, who is quite a bit older than her, kissed her, and she's been angry at him ever since for just leaving and disappearing completely. Aidan has never forgotten that kiss either, but he believed at the time he was too old for her, and then he went undercover and couldn't contact her or her brother if he'd wanted to.

The relationship between them develops quickly, which is expected given their history and the current circumstances, so it didn't feel too rushed. The plot line with the Russian mob families at first felt a little unrealistic to me, but then quickly became suspenseful. In the middle of the heaviest action though the narrative sort of jumped over the action, so that events happened but were not described. For instance, Aidan leaves Skye at a hidden cabin, and she locks the door behind him:

"But before she ever had a chance to unzip her bag and take out the blanket she'd packed, there was a muffled sound of something she wasn't sure she recognized at the door and within a few moments, two men were inside, one reaching for her, silencing her with a hand over her mouth before she could even scream."

What happened during those "few moments"? How did the men actually get inside? Did they pick the lock? Break down the door? Jimmy it open? Too much was left out there. In another scene, Aidan is sitting in a chair, with a man standing behind him, holding a gun to his head:

"Aidan jumped up from his seat while taking out his own hidden revolver and knocking the guard over the head."

I felt like that sentence should have been three or four sentences.

Other than that, the story is pretty mesmerizing. The characters are fairly well written, and the sex was sizzling. Natasha Knight specializes in erotic stories filled with spanking and other BDSM elements, and she's very good at it. For Skye, this is completely new territory, and her emotions are all over the place, as she tries to process and understand why Aidan's treatment of her embarrasses and humiliates her, yet thrills and arouses her at the same time. In addition to spanking, there is bondage and anal play. But there's also a sweet love story at the core.

Awesome hot sexy read

Natasha knight does it again. This exciting story has Skye Madden witnessing a murder on a mountain at a ski lodge, by the Russian Mob. She is saved and hidden by her crush of 10 years, Aidan Hastings, who disappeared after a kiss that she never forgot. There are many twists and turns in this thriller, erotic romance. It goes deep into the feelings and emotions of the characters and as their relationship develops they explore elements of BDSM and erotic hot sex. All the things that make for a good book are present, romance, mystery, danger, violence, spanking and more. This is an awesome read.

Great story well written The plot is filled with action suspense romance and tons of hot scenes The Hero is a strong Alpha male who knows just what the heroine needs even if she doesn't Will the Hero be able to keep the feisty sometimes bratty heroine safe Will they make it throw this will they find their happily ever after should they be able to stay safe and ahead of the bad guys you will have to go get the book to find out It is a must read but only if you like your stories Hot

Excellent one-stop reference for a very complex field

The 1997 edition of the Encyclopedia of Packaging Technology is an excellent reference for anyone who works with packaging, especially for those people who have no academic or vocational training in these subjects. You will get the clearest explanations of any subject that falls under packaging. I only wish it included the original material from 1986. The 1997 edition adds to what is in 1986, but if you do not have the 1986 edition, you will be missing relevant background on the older technologies. The only packaging reference you will need unless you are trying to figure out how to actually create a package.

Good elementary review of basic packaging technology.

As a reference text, this book is a good beginning for anyone not totally familiar with the packaging industry. Hence it can be used as a starting point to begin further detailed investigation into specific subjects. Probably not worth the $200+ price, as it will mostly sit on your shelf as a reference text. Better information could be obtained from other sources or via the library.

War between gods takes backseat to emotional angst

The Goddess War trilogy sets Greek gods in a modern world that no longer believes in them. More importantly, they're all dying. Desperate for a cure, or at least a way to survive her unhappy family's death throes, Athena and her brother Hermes have teamed up with some special humans. Not a horrible premise, right? In fact, I really enjoyed the first book, Antigoddess, and I was super excited for its sequel. Key word: was.

Warning: there may be SPOILERS for Book 1.

There is a war going on between gods. Let that marinate for a moment. WAR between GODS. This is the situation, yet somehow this whole book revolves around nothing but emotional and/or relationship angst. I'm not entirely sure what the author was trying to pull off, but the end result was this: the writing, plot and characters suffered. The plot jumps around the world at lightspeed, and everything feels arbitrary and is told instead of shown.

The main characters are completely different people, and the secondary characters are little more than foils. Henry and Andy barely keep the story rooted in the normal world. Hermes is there to defuse conflict, make Athena worried and throw out the occasional line about liking "pretty boys" (which is such a 180 from his pining and grieving over the witch in Book 1, I got whiplash). Cassandra, instead of the sympathetic character she was, vacillates between two extremes: grief for her dead boyfriend and, more often, full of rage/hates everything and everyone/wants to kill all gods. She became a caricature.

Athena is almost unrecognizable. Her complicated relationship with Odysseus was amusing and enjoyable in Book 1. Now, I am not amused. Ody's former girlfriend shows up and makes a love triangle; but worse, instead of being the untouchable, mildly conflicted goddess she was in Book 1, Athena likes/loves/wants Odysseus. Odysseus loves her. There's nothing in the way. Athena accepts that she has these feelings but doesn't want to act on them. Fine, except for the fact that she barely gives a reason why. There's no "because I'm the goddess" or "because I'm having an identity crisis" or "I'm afraid destroying my goddess rules will hasten my death" or something. No, it's just, I like you, you like me, but let's not, at least for this book. The whole thing feels so contrived, which basically sums up the whole book.

Also, Athena's big "plan" was not worthy of the goddess of wisdom and battle, even one in an agitated, distracted state. It felt like lazy, contrived plotting, as if the author said, we just have to get to this point so this stuff can happen. On that note, none of the action/conflict made an impact or affected me emotionally. I wasn't worried about anyone. I didn't really care about them.

This was one of my most anticipated sequels and, while I'll probably read the next book and see how the author chooses to bring certain people back to life and/or explain the god-like powers of certain mortals, I am no longer super excited about this series.

As Lady Catherine de Bourgh would say, "I am most seriously displeased."

Blake's vivid imagery always leaves us breathless

A few years ago, when Kendare Blake first published Anna Dressed in Blood and completely won us over, I never dreamed that her books could become even better. Anna was such a spectacular debut that it left very little room for improvement. And yet here we are, in the middle of a new series that is even more beautiful, more mature, written with a surer hand and far greater control over the narrative.

Mortal Gods is exactly what the title suggests – it brings the story of Greek gods divided into two factions and warring among themselves, both groups desperately fighting for survival. Athena leads one side, our side, and Ares leads the other. Their conflicts are merciless and bloody and their only goal is to survive and get revenge.

Just because Athena, Hermes and Odysseus are on our side does not mean that they are in the right. This entire series exists in a morally gray area. Ancient Gods, no matter how well-adapted to our times, have a whole different set of values and moral principles. Human life is not as significant for them, and scruples are often just another word in the dictionary. Even mortal characters like Cassandra and Andy are reincarnations of important mortals from ancient times, and the more they remember their old lives, the more they adapt to the gods’ way of thinking.

Still, one can’t help but feel sympathy for a physically weakened Athena while she coughs out feathers from her lungs, or our poor, likeable Hermes, who eats and eats and eats, but is never full or strong like he used to be. The torture of each god is highly symbolic. For instance, according to the legend, Athena once punished her crow familiar by turning his beautiful white feathers to black and now she is tortured by feathers sprouting painfully from her body. Hermes, god of feasts and banquets (among other things) is never sated and he’s getting thinner by the day.

While Cassandra grieves and despairs, Athena and Odysseus are dancing around each other, never quite reaching a common ground. The love of these two is so painfully obvious, and yet there are so many barriers between them, far too many things that stand in the way of their true feelings, Athena’s pride among them.

Mortal Gods is even darker and bloodier than Antigoddess, which is no small thing, believe me. Blake is known for the vivid imagery she creates with seeming ease. Her descriptions are always detailed and precise, and the emotional reactions she provokes are off the charts. She always achieves the desired effect, be it sympathy, horror or even disgust.

Brava, Ms. Blake. I can’t wait for the next book.

Here we are back again in Mortal Gods with Athena, Cass, Hermes, Odysseus and the rest of the gang, with a few new additions. It’s been a scant few months since the climactic ending of Antigoddess and View Spoiler »
Athena what you do, you do so well

Whether it’s do something right or do something wrong – this gal doesn’t do things by halves. I like Athena – to me she is the ultimate star of the show. While the books so far really have seemed to center around both Athena and Cass. This time around I was so much more interested in Athena (likely because Cass annoyed the snot out of me). Athena has her failings as it seems the book tries to make abundantly clear that “gods” have just as many flaws as an average person, but their mistakes just tend to impact people way more. I love the struggles that we see Athena go through in trying to lead this motley group of humans and gods against the other set of gods. I adore how stubborn and strong (or even bull headed at times) she can be on some fronts but then also how vulnerable she can be in others. One particular scene with her and Hermes tweaked my heartstrings so much. While I can’t say I was entirely too happy with some of the choices she makes regarding her and Odysseus I can see where she’s coming from but still hey I’m not going to agree with her on her reasoning. Seize what you want I say!

Sometimes you just wanna smack that pouty look off someone’s face

Who? Why Cass I tell you! View Spoiler » turned Cass into this bitter anger ball. Just reading her scenes sometimes was like a trip to the dentist to have a sour tooth pulled that leaves this nasty abscess behind that you can’t treat with anything! Did she annoy me that much – yeah, she did, she really did. I’m quite sure that was the exact intention and response the author was trying to get out of me. And it worked, oh boy did it work. Cass only has one thing on her mind really and that’s revenge. In a way she is almost unrecognizable to me from the original character I knew and liked in the first book. I’m one of those readers that has a really hard time enjoying a book if I’m not enjoying reading a specific character – but luckily Cass is not the only point of view that we read from, and not everything centers around her part of the storyline. So my rating is unfortunately a direct reflection of mostly Cass. – This was still a great book and I definitely plan on reading the next one – but I can’t get over how annoyed I was most of the time and I personally don’t like to be annoyed for the bulk of a reading experience.

More Hermes, Odysseus and party please!

I really enjoyed the snippets of Hermes and Odysseus I got this time around so much so that I wish there could have been more from them. I’m thinking that we might see much more of Hermes taking the spot light in the next book but that also might be wishful thinking on my part. I found myself ultimately only really caring about Athena, Hermes and Odysseus in this book and I know some of that is because I didn’t like Cass’ attitude in Mortal Gods but I also felt like I needed more of a presence from the other secondary characters. They were so very second fiddle that I couldn’t bring myself to care much about them.

Why do second books cliff hang me so?

I’m not a fan of the second book cliffhangers. Indeed you could say I hate them. Rarely are they ever done in a way that leaves me “wanting” more. Do I want to continue reading – yes. But am I left with a feeling of dissatisfaction? – even more so yes. It is really something I see mostly in young adult books and perhaps its part of the reason why more and more lately I find myself only reading the first book in a YA series. I am not a patient person. I think there must surely be a way to avoid cliffhangers at the end of series novels.

You can smack me now for my whining – cause I still enjoyed it

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read and fast paced to book. The two major issued I pointed out are purely my own and I think many others might not have a problem at all. So don’t judge on the rating because I did literally still devour this book in a day and look forward to seeing what happens next. The writing flowed great from scene to scene without any lulls so I rarely put the book down. I adore Blake’s storytelling and her ability to make me really connect with some of her characters and her imagery continues to be top notch.

Tough Love - May not work, but can't hurt

The title of this book is what grabbed my attention - the five words nobody wants to hear. Inside, Dr Clarke gives hard hitting advice for dealing with an adulterous spouse, based on the tough love approach probably first advocated by Dr James Dobson. I found Dr Clarke's book more direct in its advice than Dobson's however. Clarke makes the victim realize that they have nothing to feel bad about, which if all that's one is to get out of the book, isn't a bad thing. Clarke hammers home again and again that nothing one spouse does to the other justifies the adulterer from the sinful action of adultery. Preach it, Dr Clarke.
I suspect the people that take Dr Clarke's advice are not very likely to win their spouses back - but then they aren't likely no matter what strategy they follow. So why not? Take Dr Clarke's advice and start picking up the pieces and feel better about yourself. Don't let your adultering spouse attempt to transfer their guilt onto you. Take charge! They flipped your world over, so flip it back!

An Orientalist View of Hinduism

Michaels starts with the right questions, but he is unable to shake off the distorting glasses of Orientalist Western scholarship that has dealt with Hinduism either as history of conflict between race and caste or as magic and mysticism. The harder Michaels tries, the more confused his writing becomes. This is typical of writers who know India from books and whose experience with life within the Hindu tradition is very superficial; a year in an Indian city as a student simply does not provide the understanding that is required. As things stand, he simply repeates Orientalist prejudices.
Michaels' analysis of the difference between Vedism and "mainstream Hinduism" is not even correct, showing his lack of insight into both. It is curious that he defines Hinduism as three different religions, insisting that is different from other religions. How about the variety of Christian religions: Catholic, Mormon (with its own book), Charismatic (the ones that get bitten by snakes and speak in tongues), and the many different Protestant Churches? Or Islam with its Sunni, Shi'a, Ismaili, Wahhabi, Sufi, and other sects? If Michaels is trying to show how Hinduism is different sociologically from other religions, he has failed. He should have asked the question: In what sense is obtaining knowledge in Hinduism different from that in other religions? He would have then found the answers to the basic questions posited in the beginning of the book.

Something to think about

Living On The Home Front could be considered an experimental living history experience. The author, Megan Westley decided to try and live her daily life as Britons did during the second world war. She divided the year intonsix two month blocks and would introduce new concepts into as they would have happened. For the British this was a total war and the government had a hand in every aspect of life. She had to struggle not only with rationing, but trying to make do with period recipes and what was available. Read the book to find out how it changed how she now views things and then think to yourself about what you might do to change your life.

A Helpful Account of Wartime Britain, Particularly Rationing

Megan Westley's book is absorbing and more importantly, it is one of the most lucid breakdowns of the complicated system of British WWII rationing that I have seen. Because Westley wished to "live" the war on the home front, she had to become an expert in navigating not only between ration coupons and ration points, but also the constant shift of how much food per weight or volume was available--or not available--at any given time.

Anyone familiar with the wonderful _The 1940s House_ (Wall to Wall, Channel 4 television production) will likely enjoy Westley's book also, in that she subjects herself, to the degree possible, to the same wartime life that this reality TV family experienced. I appreciated Westley's honesty about her degree of success in trying to live a WWII life in 21st-century Britain, especially when she found her days too boring to write about, or when she had to take a break from the tedium just to come back to it with more commitment. At times, however, her experiment seemed so insubstantial in light of what was actually occuring in wartime Britain. She acknowledges this, however.

Finally, what I found most helpful was the clear year-by-year timeline of how the war started, progressed, and concluded. While Westley does not try to write a scholarly monograph, I would recommend this book to any historian, particularly a food historian, as a preliminary read and reference source befor delving into more detailed scholarship on this fascinating part of British history.

Kaypahl has no reason to live. No one likes Kaypahl, not even her sister. In a city where women are lithe and trim, Kaypahl is known as the Fat-Bottom Girl. Even worse, the gods are withholding rain, and the entire city will starve by winter if the corn crops wither and die. Many human sacrifices have been made, but none have pleased the gods.

Kaypahl says goodbye to her only friend: the temple ruins outside her city. When she announces her decision to sacrifice her life because helping her people will give meaning to it, Kaypahl is stunned when a ghostly voice from the ruins gives her instructions on how to make the sacrifice and promises to meet Kaypahl on the other side of death.

Following that advice, Kaypahl not only survives her attempted sacrifice but finds herself facing the daughter of the rain god Chaac. She then is cast into the hands of a strange guardian. He leads her on a journey that Kaypahl doesn’t understand, more and more distressed that every day brings nothing but clear and bright skies. She must find a way to sacrifice herself to the gods in a new and different way that will cause the heavens to bring the downpours that will save an entire nation.

Really Great Story!

If you've read the blurb, you know that Kaypahl sacrifices herself. This is the story of a girl with such a pure heart, she continues to love those who only ridicule and reject her. Even her own sister who was once unattractive also, turned on her when she blossomed into a beauty with womanhood.... all except the princess Leepak, she always had a warm smile and a wave for all, even a peck on the cheek for a child offering her a flower. But she is concerned that her people will starve if the rains don't come soon. Chaac has not been pleased by any of the sacrifices made so far. ...believing that she won't even be missed, she offers to be the next sacrifice...... at least her family will be proud of her then.
So she is at the old ruins, at the foot of the temple. These ruins have been her only friend. Where she would pour her heart out and the stone would listen to her. Now she comes to say good bye..... she here's a voice that says..." when the time comes, run as fast and hard as you can, when you fly through the air, stand tall & proud but point your toes, when you sink, spread your arms like a bird taking flight." " when you sacrifice yourself for the sake of your people, I will meet you on the other side."
So after they adorn her, get her ready and then parade through the city streets, thousands of people cheering, chanting her name, past the kings palace where the royal family stood in all their regala.
When she is in place, she remembers what the voice told her, so she runs as fast as she can and hurles herself towards the water below.....
She wakes up confused... there's a woman with her. It's Chaac's daughter. He told her to retrieve you & revive you. It's not your time to die. There is something about this woman, Kaypahl is reminded of Princess Leepak.........
There is an amazing journey ahead, lessons to be learned, some surprises, and an absolutely remarkable resolution for Kaypahl.
I started this journey feeling sad for Kaypahl, but I couldn't have been happier for her in the end. I recommend this short, but fabulous story to everyone, of all ages.
