About the Author

Betty Reid Mandell is Professor Emerita at Bridgewater State College, Massachusetts. She is the editor of The Crisis of Caregiving: Social Welfare Policy in the United States, Palgrave/Macmillan, 2010, and is the co-editor of New Politics.

 

 

Barbara Schram graduated from Antioch College and received masters degrees in both sociology and social work from Columbia University and a doctorate from Harvard University with a specialization in education and social policy.

Worked as a  program direction of a large  recreational and cultural organization, planning programs for children and young adults and supervising staff who delivered these services.  Spent several years as the director of a community agency in a low income urban area helping parents become involved in their children’s education and effect changes in the schools that better reflected their cultural background and values.  Spent 26 years at Northeastern University where she originated and then taught in the Human Services Program.  Designed appropriated courses and supervised student internships.  

Has done extension volunteer work with citizen groups involved in interracial and special needs adoptions, improving services for persons with learning disabilities and improving prison education programs.

In addition to this text she has written over 20 articles and a book entitled, Creating the Small Scale Social Program:  From idea to implementation to evaluation.

FAR TOO SIMPLISTIC!

FAR too simple. This book would be appropriate for the 6th or 7th grade, certainly no for college students.The authors spend far too much time with appearance type items, formatting, etc. and not nearly enough on the powerful tools in the office suite. For instance, nowhere in the Excel section do they mention absolute versus relative cell references. That notion is a basic concept that MUST be understood to build the simplest worksheet. Not even mentioned! Don't, and say you did. No, don't even say you did...

John Gregory-Smith is a chef and food writer who specialises in Turkish cuisine. the recipes are good, authentic AND it offers advice and info -- everything you'd want

I like this not only because the recipes are good and authentic (or so my Turkish friends tell me), but it offers useful advice about what to use as substitutes if you don't have access to a few Turkish spices, plus concise information about the traditions of certain dishes, regional differences, and that sort of thing. Plus, the cover of the cookbook is laminated in a good way so you don't have to worry about getting food on it. Now THERE'S an idea, FGS.

Great book, easy to read, good reflections and an extraordinary woman. Looses one star for all the formatting errors and the unsupported Table of Content.

I will remember the chapters about social companies, the reflections about relationships and the 13%.

There need to be more people like Anita, in the business world. Real, raw, vulnerable, fearless and different thinking, she nicely captures the essence of being human while conducting business. I gave this book to several of my managers as a Christmas gift.

This book is as good of a summary of the necessary skills and practices that are essential to contemporary communication design as I have ever seen. I was educated in graphic design in my undergrad by the legacy of modern design and Bauhaus pedagogy, even in the wake of the sweeping technological change that was occurring all around us. This book finally catches up on a curriculum and approach that would make sense for today. After working professionally as a graphic designer for 5 years, I'm currently enrolled in a graduate program for media design. This book tells that graphic design is just the beginning, but a very necessary foundation for all kinds of design practices that our dynamic world requires.This book represent a fairly off the shelf curriculum that would serve any designer(beginner to advanced) well to follow. All that would be left is years to practice... Very Nice!

Love this book! Bought it for one of my brothers who is interested in going to the field. To benefit from this book though, you need to have an art b.g. My sibling does, but isn't familiar with what graphic design as done in the digital field.

Another great thing about this book: It covers everything fully in plain words, including the business side of graphic design (e.g, setting prices, software programs used in this field, etc.)

A great introduction to anyone interested in becoming a graphic artist!
