Best refreshing recipes and a keeper

I have been a recipe collector for over 40 years. These Recipes are as wonderful as expected. Clean, healthy and enjoyed by my husband and weekend guests. In fact, our guests ordered a book for themselves following a meal and review of the text. I LOVE the THai burgers and ALL the sauces. My husband always reports feeling refreshed following a meal from an.ITSU recipe. I am hoping that the chicken noodle soup recipe will appear at some point......

repetitive recipes

Its a decent cookbook but I find the ingredients are very repetitive.
also, many of the dishes require multiple recipes. Meaning the salad is one recipe but then the dressing on a different page and with a whole other set of instructions. Same with the side dishes and the soups.

How does one communicate the intersection of life and the imagination-its sources, questions and preoccupations? This anthology of new American poets variously, and more often than not, exquisitely explores this puzzle. Comprised of discordant voices-85, to be exact-from the gritty, near-confessional wordplay of Olena Kalytiak Davis and Paisley Rekdal to the terse experiments and mini-saga prose poems of Matthea Harvey and Joel Brouwer, this anthology uncaps the concerns of contemporary life, releasing vapors to mix with the contemporary imagination. (Or, life and imagination as perceived by poets under age 45 and with three or fewer books-for better or worse, the anthology's selection criteria). The imagination rests, as with as with Oni Buchanan's exploration of love-as-yak, or, in Carrie St. George Comer's poems, reels in memory. Other times, emboldened by language, the imagination "weaves / the world together with a quicker blur of armed / seduction" (Brenda Shaughnessy, "Postfeminism"). Even the titles (compare Maurice Manning's "On God" to Timothy Donnelly's "Twenty-Seven Props for a production of Eine Lebenszeit") reveal the historical, philosophical and aesthetic sources of these poems that often speak to "you," the "Bare-faced, flint-hearted, recoilless / Reader" (Olena Kalytiak Davis, "sweet reader, flannelled and tulled"), inviting intimacy, assuming courage and requiring immersion in the moment.

About the Author
Marvin's first book, World's Tallest Disaster, was awarded the 2000 Kathryn A. Morton Prize by Robert Pinksy (Sarabande 2001). In 2002, she received the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. Her poems have appeared in The Paris Review, New England Review, Ploughshares, Fence, Georgia Review, Slate, and The Kenyon Review. She is a creative writing professor at the College of Staten Island. Dumanis was the Poetry Curator at Brazos Bookstore, a former Poetry Editor of Gulf Coast, and is currently completing his Ph.D. in Creative Writing at the University of Houston. A two-time Academy of American Poets Prizewinner and recipient of Fulbright, Truman Capote, and James Michener Fellowships, he has published his poems in numerous literary journals.

a solid collection

This book reminds me of the Poulin anthology. It seems to start where the Poulin leaves off, providing a look at the poets much too young and new to be included in any of Poulin's editions. Some of the writers in here are among the most notorious in their generation, the ones that seem to be winning honor after honor, but the book has some surprises as well: interesting poets I read for the first time include Sabrina Mark, Lisa Jarnot, and Julianne Buchsbaum. A lot of the bigger names too: Nick Flynn, Kevn Young, Natasha Trethewey. Some surprise omissions, but that's true of all anthologies. All in all, a pretty good intro to the poets who are probably well-known to many of their peers but not to us older folk. Definitely has more experimental poems than a lot of the big anthologies, but there's also a surprising number of writers using meter.

Pity

Is it the methodology that is to blame for this underwhelming collection? It is quaintly restricted to poets born from 1960 (ok) who had no book pub'd BEFORE 1995(?) and had pub'd NO MORE THAN 3 BOOKS when this collection was being assembled(???). I'm afraid it's the guys listed on pxxviii they DIDN'T include, the divine Denise Duhamel entre autres, that got me slavering. And then there's the sheer volume - EIGHTYFIVE names! OK, it's not the poets' fault - the university presses need product and they're only trying to secure their future after all - but it needs to be said that these poems for the most part lack emotion, form, fun, concision, lyricism and fundamentally a sense of NECESSITY, their willed obscurity suggesting not hidden depths but concealment, obfuscation. On form, was there really NO RHYME till p333 (from the delightful Patty Seyburn) and precious little afterwards?! Otherwise the only oases I spotted in this formless desert were the modestly pleasing ghazal on p383 and the canzone (like a sestina but harder) on p414. As for the 'sonnet' on p376, sonnets come in many forms these days, but line count is not enough.

Bottom line: these poems are just plain dull - dull and samey. Yeah, I know - how can 85 poets be samey (quite an achievement!) and some of these guys, other than Seyburn and one I'm saving for the end, must have legs. If these were paintings I'd say they needed to be better lit, better framed and better hung; in this dingy basement they don't show at their best. Better yet, stash 'em in the cellar for posterity to discover (life's too short to attempt the work of posterity now!)

Anthologies only work if they are collections of gems the compiler genuinely treasures (example: David Lehman). Even selecteds are often compromises; only the original individual volumes, with good and less good alongside, are the biz, like LPs/CDs (am I old fashioned? yes). Collections of the merely 'representative' are dreary compromises; although funnily enough this one was ALMOST redeemed for me by the very last poem (the fact that we wind up with Rachel Zucker, a name new to me, shows that alphabetical anthologies aren't invariably doomed) which was everything I want from a poem, funny, witty, ingenious, subtle, disturbing, poignant - everything this collection, alas, is not.

Mike Dumanis is a nice guy who did a terrible job on this anthology. It should have been called "Mike Dumanis' Anthology of His Iowa Friends (and a few others he met at AWP)." The most myopic anthology I've ever seen.

He is a frequent presenter at Microsoft conferences. Wee Hyong is deeply passionate about how organizations can make use of business intelligence tools to derive business insights, and make better decisions. Kaarthik Sivashanmugam is a lead software engineer on the SQL Server Integration Services team. Kaarthik joined the team during SQL Server 2005 launch and has been involved in several feature improvements to SSIS since then. Rakesh Parida is a software development engineer on the SQL Server Integration Services team. He has worked on SSIS since SQL Server 2005, and was involved in many of the new features in this release, particularly ETL frameworks, data warehousing, and SSIS based solutions. Matt Masson is a senior software development engineer on the SQL Server Integration Services team. Matt joined the team shortly after the SQL Server 2005 release, and has worked on many aspects of the product. ... is my measured response to the reviews entitled "Full coverage of the subject matter" and "A great reference book on SSIS 2012". It is also my warning to those considering this book as an SSIS learning aid.

You have to wonder what's going on if the book gets around to building its first SSIS package in Chapter 7: if it were a book for beginners, Chapter 2 or 3 would be a more appropriate place, and if it were a book for intermediate or advanced SSIS users, this introductory material would not be needed at all. The beginner who persevered through Chapters 1-6, learning about the upgrade procedure and the new features of the 2012 release (revised syntax of XML-format SSIS package files, anyone?), gets to load a text file into a database - and then, without a single transformation explained, is asked to implement parent-child packages, and execute them with T-SQL (!) and C# (!!). With this, core SSIS training is over, and the book moves on to more advanced or niche topics like CDC, "fuzzy" transformations and DQS, administration and performance.

It is only those more advanced topics, found in Part III, which can make this book worth a look. (The upgrade-and-new-features stuff of Chapters 3-5 can be found online). Although I did consider hiring an assassin to go after the author of Chapter 10 - when talking about SSIS 2012, it is very important to be clear about the differences between package deployment model and project deployment model, and that chapter fails this test like there's no tomorrow - the problem is not really with the individual chapters, but with lopsided, incomplete nature of their sum.

Quick guide to SQL 2012 IS New features

As an Intermediate developer in SQL 2005 SSIS, I found this book useful to learn all new features in 2012. However I did not have a test environment to execute the flow. I was mostly interested to learn CDC changes and Configuration changes, which were explained well. The XML file import was explained in simple terms. Enjoyed reading this book and need to dive deep-in to understand in more detail.I would definitely recommend this book as all in one package. it starts from basis and covers all the components in SSIS.

A great reference book on SSIS 2012

It is a great book for intermediate to advanced developers in SQL Server in general or SSIS in particular. Especially I was impressed with the Chapter 3 : Upgrading to SSIS 2012 and Chapter 5: Team Development. It is always helpful to develop SSIS packages in a seamless source control environment like other SQL objects such as stored procedures, DDLs. Data cleansing chapter could have been better with little in depth explanation. However, the book is a very good reference guide for SSIS development especially if you want to know the new features of SSIS in SQL 2012, CDC, configuration, SSIS Security.
A great book indeed.

A comprehensive treatise in five volumes, Philosophy of the Masters is an English translation of the original two-volume Punjabi work, Gurmat Siddhant, written by Maharaj Sawan Singh. This volume discusses in great detail the spiritual discipline essential for following the path of God-realization. The author, a spiritual adept, was popularly known as the Great master. His exposition of the science of Sant Mat is based on his personal knowledge and inner experience. In order to reveal the universal character of this science, the concepts and principles elucidated in the book are supported by quotations from writings of mystics from different countries and backgrounds.

Philosophy of the Masters, written in simple but forceful language, has been very popular. The original has been translated into several of the main Indian languages. The English translation, first published in the 1960s has gone through several reprints and has also been translated into some other European languages. Yes, I liked the book, Los Doce del Nacimiento. I wish I was able to find more, in good condition. I am taking them to children in El Salvador and Honduras as part of my Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos trip, to visit my two God children, in El Salvador. I believe it is the perfect book to read and then give, to let them know they are treasured as well to believe and hope in their future. Their beginning may have been rough but they have the chance, with NPH, to dream and be successful.

McLellan has the opportunity to fine tune his writing skills and honestly be a big name in the industry with innovative tales such as this. Gritty, raw, and sometimes over the top, American Flowers is a true novel and McLellan doesn't spare any details. I would definitely not recommend this book to anyone under the age of 16 because of this.

Lately I've had quite a few people ask me what American Flowers is about. Short answer? It's about drug addiction.

The longer answer, like the world of drugs itself, is more complicated, with a lot of foggy images and poorly defined edges.

It's about screwed up family lives, secondhand social prejudices, failed expectations and the ripple effect. It's about young people swimming over their heads in shark-infested waters, completely oblivious to what awaits them.

It's about the terrible things people are capable of doing when they have nothing left to lose.

It's about anger.

It's about love.

The book is very well written and easy to follow

Outstanding book! Read it in two days, couldn't put it down! The book is very well written and easy to follow. I absolutely loved the story line and where it took the characters. I've read many many books but this is by far one of my favorites! I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is into young adult romances. For me, if a book makes me feel like I'm in the story, it's a really great book, and that's exactly what this book did.

Poignant and Gut-Wrenching Tale

If you’re looking for a book that makes you feel good with beautiful people, this isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for a well-written, raw glimpse into life amongst America’s disheartened, you’ll want to read Michael A. McLellan’s “American Flowers”.

Don’t let the title fool you. There’s one question to keep in mind while reading this one: What happens to flowers when they aren’t properly cared for? That’s the tidbit of info you need to keep in the back of your mind when you begin this heavy book.

“American Flowers” was so full of despair. I kept thinking does this situation really exist in our world. The answer is an unfortunate yes. There are people who live like this on a daily basis. It starts out innocently, just like it did for Chris and Allie. Then it escalates to a habit that can’t be shaken, no matter how hard they try.

The next thought I had while reading McLellan’s book was could these characters be any more stupid. Chris won’t become your next book boyfriend unless you are drawn to the dumb ones. He’s not even the town’s bad boy. Chris Shafer is a kid who didn’t come from the wrong side of the tracks. He was smack dab in the middle of the tracks and didn’t know how to extricate himself from the situation. Chris’ best friend pointed it out plain as day—they weren’t going to amount to anything. To make matters worse, Chris didn’t have any positive role models encouraging him to do otherwise. In such a bleak atmosphere, what else could this kid do but fail.

Allie, the girl he fell in love with, wasn’t in a good situation either. Can you imagine telling someone something terrible and they don’t believe you? It’s bad enough to experience that tragedy, but to have the one person you trust tell you it’s a lie… well, that’s just stretching the walls of sanity. Allie was a good girl, at least she wanted to be. The adults in her life, much like the ones in Chris’, weren’t good. They didn’t have her best interests at heart.
Both Allie and Chris had potential. They were smart kids who could have gone on to school on scholarships. But no one cared about their futures. Remember those flowers?

Every character in this book is guilty of THINKING they were doing the right thing. Chris and Allie believed that what they were doing didn’t have consequences. Allie’s cousin, Lisa, thought she was doing the right thing when she warned Allie about drug use. Problem was the girl wasn’t listening to her own advice. Mick, the supplier, thought he had the perfect setup and could continue to live beyond the reaches of the law. The adults may have started out wanting to do the right thing, but somewhere along the road the wheels fell off the truck. The parents were more irresponsible than their offspring. Chris and Allie crossed paths with an ex-con who thought he could pull off a perfect heist and not get implicated in anyway. The store owner thought he was doing the right thing instead of just cooperating. Even Jan, a woman who aided the couple, thought she had made the right decision. No one thoroughly thought before acting. Makes you wonder if they all drank from the same Kool-aid pitcher.

McLellan’s book contained two distinct messages. The first was a blatant advertisement against drug use. It reminded me of the PSAs about meth use. Poignant. Real. Scary. He did such an excellent job detailing this world. I wondered what level of intimacy he had with the subject matter (Great research, that’s what it was). The second message hits you after the end of the book. You’ll need to close the cover (or turn off the app) and think for a moment. I won’t ruin it for you. Although this book can be categorized as New Adult, it’s one of those that needs to be read by PARENTS too. The second message is for us. It’s one we can’t afford to miss. Correction. It’s one our children can’t afford for US to miss.
The ending of this heart wrenching book kept me from giving a 5-star rating. It sort of left me feeling ‘meh’. I wanted more. I needed to know more about what happened to Allie. Yes, we have imaginations and can figure it out, but after so much hopelessness I needed a definite ray of sunshine.

McLellan’s “American Flowers” is a must-read book. It’s relevant. It’s gut-wrenching. It’s a dose of reality embedded in fiction. Due to its subject matter, language, and sexual situations, it is advised for mature readers 18+.

Loved this book!

Wow!

This is quite a lot different from his other book and even better in my opinion.
McLellan really nails the challenges of being a young American in the new millennium and
touches on a lot of social and family topics that many of us have faced.
The characters literally jump off the page and the story is both riveting and heart-wrenching.
An exceptional book for both young adults and adults, but fair warning, it doesn't pull any punches.

I needed books for summer school. I tried Amazon.com because I had heard so much about it from other students. At first I was a little leary because it was a company I had no experience with. But I took a chance and was surprisingly happy. I ordered the books around May 7th or so and they were due on June 2nd. They arrived within the same week of ordering them.
